Time - Revenue/Expense Reporting by Month

We are a consulting firm - our revenue comes from billable time.  When my billable employees enter their time for the month of April, the invoice will be created in the 1st week of May.  Accrual-based reports will show this April time as May revenue (invoices with a May 1st date). I want an April P&L report (or something similar) that calculates  April revenue based on April hours multiplied times the bill rates.

Additionally, we pay our employees twice a month - 1st thru 15th (paid on the 18th) and 16th thru 31st (paid on the 3rd).  This results in a monthly payroll report having the billable time from the 2nd half of March and the 1st half of April show up as the April payroll expense in Accrual-based P&L reporting. I'm looking for an easy, straight-forward (and hopefully QuickBooks-based) way to show April payroll expenses that reflect the April hours entered

Time - Revenue/Expense Reporting by Month

Glad to have you here in the Community, @Michael360.

I can help you show the monthly revenue and expenses in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Here's how:

1. Go to the Reports menu.

2. Hover over Company & Financial.

3. Choose Profit & Loss Standard.

4. From the Dates drop-down arrow, choose This Month.

5. Enter the specific date From and To.

6. Click the Show Columns drop-down arrow, and then select Month.

I've added this link about customizing reports in QBDT. This can help organize your transactions: Customize customer, job, and sales reports.

I look forward to serving you to the best of my ability, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me regarding the reports. The Community is always available anytime.

Time - Revenue/Expense Reporting by Month

Thank you  for your response. When I follow your instructions, I get the current month's accrual-based P&L information.  However, many of the invoices for work performed in March are dated in April, because we need to wait till end of month to make many of the invoices.  What I am looking for is a way to report on all the revenue related to work performed in March - some of those invoices have March dates and some have April dates BUT all the hours are recorded in QuickBooks in March.

I have some information to share with you about QuickBooks reports, @Michael360.

QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise displays reports based on a Report set instruction. They're extracted from the file shown from your transactions. Thus, the program is unable to track them if the actual work wasn’t specified at the event.

QuickBooks reports are based on the date when the transactions were entered. This detail is what the program will use to generate your expense and revenues.

You can read this reference to learn and understand reports in QuickBooks. This offers depth information about the company and financials.

We’ll be here anytime to help if you have other report concerns. Take care and have a good one!
