Unable to mark contractor inactive

No worries, I’ve come to help and make sure you’re able to inactivate your contractors in QuickBooks, @fmarshall.

When you switch from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO), please know that some features and data don’t move. The status of your contractors and customers or jobs is one of the lists that can't be transferred. See this guide to learn more: How your books move from QBDT to QBO.

You've mentioned, the system won’t allow you to make them inactive. Did you receive any specific error messages or prompts? It helps me figure out what solution works best for you.

For now, you can perform some troubleshooting steps to resolve this. First, open your QBO account in a private or incognito window for testing. Refer to the shortcut keys below for quick navigation:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Safari 11 or newer: + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

Once logged in, try to inactive your contractors. Make sure there are no open transactions associated with them before doing the process. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your Payroll menu.
  2. Choose Contractors.
  3. Locate their names and select each.
  4. In the Active dropdown in their profile, click Mark as inactive.

In case you have vendors that are classified as contractors. Follow these steps to make them inactive:

  1. Click Expenses from your left pane.
  2. Go to Vendors.
  3. Find their names and click on Edit.
  4. Select Make inactive.

If you can do it successfully, get back to your regular browser and clear its cache. Doing this helps the program to run smoothly. You can also use other supported browsers as an alternative.

Here are some resources to help you manage contractors, their payments, reports, and more:

I’ll be here to continue helping if you need further assistance with your contractors' list. Just let me know by adding a comment below. Always keep safe!
