Work in Progress report or WIP

I am trying to create a WIP for the entire year of 2023 and I need a list of customers that were in progress during 2023 but every report I've tried is showing customers that are already paid. How do I get a report that only shows active customers meaning actively working or awaiting final payment during a time period of 1/1/2023-12/31/2023.

Work in Progress report or WIP

I know that tracking work-in-progress balances provides critical operational and financial visibility when managing projects. Let me provide some information about generating related reports in QuickBooks, Codilynn98.

If you use estimates and invoices to track work in progress, QuickBooks will automatically update the status of these transactions as you record payments against them.

For now, we're unable to generate a report showing customers with ongoing projects or outstanding payments from last year if those jobs have since been closed or paid off in QuickBooks.

As a workaround, you can get a partial picture by running a customized Transaction Detail report for 2023. Then, select invoices and payments for Transaction Type.

This will display all invoices issued last year along with any corresponding payments made. By reviewing this report, you can identify customers who likely were active and had open invoices during that period.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu, look for Custom Reports, and then click Transaction Detail.
  2. Click Customize Report and proceed to the Filters tab.
  3. Look for Transaction Type in the Choose Filter field and click on it.
  4. Click the drop-down list for Transaction Type and choose Multiple Transaction Types.
  5. Check both Invoice and Payment.
  6. Click OK.

I can certainly see the value of enhanced visibility when managing cash flow. Having insights into work-in-progress balances would certainly aid planning and decision-making.

Having said that, I recommend providing this input to QuickBooks' product engineers. Here's an article as a guide: How Do I Submit Feedback?
