940 form report error

When I filed the 2022 940 form I owed and paid the amount.  This year I filed the 2023 940 form and the IRS sent a letter stating that I owe an additional amount which happens to be the amount I paid for 2022.  After reviewing my 2023 940 I have come to the conclusion that the amount was added into line 13 as an overpayment.  Why?  I've been doing this same thing for 11 years and have had no issue.

940 form report error

Hello there, @SEDI.

Let me provide insight into why your amount was added to line 13 as an overpayment in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

To start, you may have incorrectly applied the tax payment period that's why it turns out as an overpayment. I suggest reviewing your tax payment report and ensure that you have allocated the payment to the correct quarters. If you find that the payment has been allocated to the wrong quarter, you can edit the date accordingly. However, if the dates (period, meaning from and to date, not the check date) are correct, I recommend that you get in touch with our support team to further investigate the issue and find possible solutions.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Help menu.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of your concern, and select Continue.
  4. Sign in to your Intuit Account, and select continue.
  5. Select chat with us or Have us call you.
