Adding a Taxing Agency

Using the updated Sales Tax center for automated sales tax, is it possible to create a custom agency for collection? My client pays taxes to a county and the county is not available in the list provided. I have asked QB support, and they seem to not understand my question.

Adding a Taxing Agency

Hello there, tburch! We understand how relevant it is for you to conveniently track your sales tax within the system.

We always aim to ensure that you can customize the program according to your preferences. The Sales Tax Center allows you to modify tax agencies, rates, and settings. However, not all states have the local taxes option in QuickBooks. Thus, creating a custom agency for collection is unavailable in QuickBooks Online. If you wish to suggest adding this feature to future updates, you can submit feedback to our software engineers. Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon, then select Feedback.
  2. Type in your feature request.
  3. Click Next to submit.

You can add a new category that you will use in your service item as your workaround. Let me guide you through the process:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the New option.
  3. Pick Liabilities as your account type.
  4. Choose Other Current Liabilities in the "Save account under" option.
  5. In the Tax Form section, select Sales Tax Payable.
  6. Enter Custom County Tax Agency in the Account name tab.
  7. Hit Save.

Next, let's add a service item. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Sales menu, then choose Products and Services.
  2. Click the New option, then choose Service.
  3. Enter Custom County Tax Agency in the Name box.
  4. In the Income account dropdown, select the Custom County Tax you've previously created.
  5. Tap Save and Close.

Once everything's good, you can use this item when creating invoices to track your custom sales tax.

Additionally, you can run the Sales Tax Liability report to view your sales tax info anytime.
