Finally got me 1099, after I filed!  And I overestimated the amount on it.  So how do i file an amendment.  This has never happened to me before.  Now i'm paying too much to IRS and state.

Hi there, Dana2020taxes.

Thank you for visiting QuickBooks Community. I'll share details about how the amendment works and route you to the right support to help you further.

For now, QuickBooks doesn't support or process of filing amendments to revise the 1099 form that was filed. You need to manually file the amendment to make corrections to the 1099 forms that were already reported/filed. Use these IRS instructions and work with them for the correction.

You can refer to this article to see different information on how 1099 works in QuickBooks: What is a 1099 and do I need to file one?.

I'm also adding this article to view various details on how QBSE is designed to help you record your self-employed income and expenses, track mileage, and prepare your Schedule C: QuickBooks Self-Employed Overview.

Please let me know if you have any follow-up questions in the comment section. I'll be here should you need further assistance. Take care and have a good one.

Thanks for that information.

When you say QuickBooks doesn't support amendments are you including TurboTax?  I got here from their webpage. And I did my taxes on TurboTax. So you are saying that I can not do an amendment on TurboTax?

What I have read I need to wait some amount of time before filing my amendment.  What amount of time is necessary?

And when I do an amendment, am I basically redoing my entire tax filing?  Meaning I have to redo all my business deductions and everything?  As if I didn't do one already?

Sorry for all the questions.  As I said this has never happened before.  I'm very frustrated and confused.

thanks

I wish I could make it better, @Dana2020taxes.

TurboTax allows you to prepare and file your taxes that is currently not available in QuickBooks Self-Employed. However, it doesn't mean you're unable to amend your taxes in TurboTax since it is not available in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

With this, I'd recommend contacting the Technical Support of TurboTax so a specialist can help you prepare and file the amendment of your taxes. You can do so by following the instructions outlined in this article: TurboTax Support Contact Us Page – Get Help from TurboTax.

But please be informed that you'll have to contact first your agency for any amendment related to your taxes especially when it has been accepted by the IRS.

What do you mean check with 'your agency'?  What agency?  Are you referring to the 'agency' I got the 1099 from?  They just didn't send me the 1099 till AFTER i had to file my taxes and I over estimated.  Too many things happened in 2020 that flowed over into early 2021 that I just didn't notice i didn't get the 1099 when I was suppose to have.

And I got to this place from a link in Turbo Tax as a place to find out how to do an amendment to my taxes.  While you have attempted to help and I appreciate it,  this really hasn't been helpful.  Waisted time when Turbo Tax should have just referred me to their support!

Thanks for following up with the Community, Dana2020taxes. I'd be more than happy to go over how to prepare and file an amended tax return.

The first step is gathering your original return and any new documents needed to create the amendment. If you need to correct income that was reported on your return, you may have a new or amended W-2 or 1099 form.

In the event you filed the return using TurboTax, it can be accessed online by signing in to your account. If you didn't file with TurboTax and can't locate a copy of it, the IRS's website has a tool called Get Transcript which can be utilized to order your tax transcript. Transcripts show most of the lines from your return, including income, deductions, credits, and tax payments.

Next, you'll need to get the proper forms. Form 1040-X is the appropriate one for amending returns. You'll additionally need any forms that will be impacted by your change. For example, if you're changing your itemized deductions, you'll also need a copy of Schedule A for that year.

You can prepare your amended return in TurboTax using the version that applies to the tax year you're working with.

Here's how:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Access the return.
  3. Click on the link for amending your return.

After using the link for amending returns, TurboTax will guide you through the process of filing your amendment. If you didn't use TurboTax to file your return, you can use it to prepare the amendment by entering your information to match what you filed the first time. Afterwards, you can start amending it.

Once you've determined how you'd like to proceed with preparing your amendment, you'll need to fill out Form 1040-X and submit your amended form(s).

You can additionally find our TurboTax Community, FAQs, and many tools/resources on our TurboTax Support page.

If there's any questions, I'm just a post away. Have a wonderful day!
