Disable State Unemployment Tax for Exempt Organization

I'm setting up payroll for a company that is exempt from State Unemployment, but it's not giving me the option to select exempt or turn off state unemployment. Any tips on how to solve this issue?

Disable State Unemployment Tax for Exempt Organization

Hello there, Sarah. Let me walk you through the steps to exempt a company from State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) taxes in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To exempt a company from SUI taxes, you'll have to go through each employee and exempt them individually. Here's how:

  1. Go to Payroll and click Employees.
  2. Select the employee.
  3. From the Tax Withholding section, click Edit.
  4. In the Tax Exemptions dropdown, put a checkmark on the SUI box.
  5. Click Save, then Done.

However, if you don't have these options, it's possible that there's a temporary problem with the browser. Let's isolate the issue by accessing your account in an incognito window. Here are some keyboard shortcuts:

  • For Google Chrome browser: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox browser: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Safari browser: Command + Shift + N

Then, refer to the steps above. Once resolved, you can return to your regular browser to clear its cache. You may also opt to switch to another compatible one.

Furthermore, you can run payroll reports to review your payroll liabilities and payments.

Please don't hesitate to visit us again in the Community if you have further questions about SUI taxes. I'll be more than glad to assist you further. Keep safe.
