Does anyone have a fix for recent sales tax calculation errors

I appreciate you taking the time to inform us here in the Community space, @HPWStacey. I'll share details to help you fix the sales tax error inside QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Please know that the browser you use to access your company file accumulates temporary internet files that can affect how the program works. I recommend performing basic browser troubleshooting to ensure yours is free from temporary data and to restore it to its default function to prevent sales tax errors from happening.

To begin, you'll want to access your company file using an incognito or private browser through these shortcut keys:

  • Safari 11 or newer: +Shift+N
  • Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Safari: Command+Shift+N

Once you're in, enter a transaction and see if sales tax is still present. If they don't show inside, proceed to clear your browser's cache. Refer to this article for the steps: Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online.

You can also use other compatible browsers if the issue persists. Refer to this article to see the list of compatible browsers in QuickBooks Online: Other browsers.

It is important to note that the program calculates sales taxes, not only based on your customer's tax status and where you sell and ship the products. A service or product's tax category can also be the cause of why sales tax is present in your sales. For more information, check this article: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.

In addition, you can visit this page to learn more about sales taxes inside QuickBooks Online: Sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

You can always count on me to be around if you have other QuickBooks-related questions or need assistance handling sales taxes and transactions inside the system. Keep safe.

Does anyone have a fix for recent sales tax calculation errors

This is not quite correct.  I am running QB in New Private window and still have all sorts of issues.  Here is the error that is being displayed:

"" Our automatic Sales tax calculator is down, so we've used your business address to work out how much is due.  Please check this is correct before you send the invoice, or try again later""

So qb is calculating sales tax based on our location (we are remote sellers) rather than calculating the ship to address.  It is a mess.  Also other issue is, when we open an earlier invoice to edit, it recalculates the tax based on our address and changes the whole invoice amount.  This is happening for the past 10 days.  I called multiple times and the support does not know what they are talking and mentioned this in an email.  (The sales tax issue is currently an investigation that has been open. Its being working and will be resolved as quickly as possible. The investigation number is INV-113979)

Does anyone know how to see the status of the Investigation.

Does anyone have a fix for recent sales tax calculation errors

Dealing with incorrect sales tax calculations in QuickBooks as a remote seller can be frustrating, Krish, especially when it impacts your invoices and customer satisfaction. Let me provide you with the investigation status and offer alternative options to address the issue.

The investigation status is still In Progress. Our engineers are currently looking into it. While they are working on it, we don't have a timeline for when this gets fixed.

In the meantime, you can manually uncheck the tax box or set the tax rate to 0% as a workaround.

I'm sharing this article as a guide to help understand US sales and use tax rules: Learn about sales and use tax in the US.

In addition, you can run the Sales Tax Liability report to view your sales tax info anytime. This ensures everything is accurate before you file your return to your tax agency.

You can always get back to the Community space if there's anything else you need to know about managing sales taxes or other QuickBooks tasks, Krish. I'm here to help all the time.

Does anyone have a fix for recent sales tax calculation errors

Thanks to QB team.  the issue of sales tax calculation errors based on the seller's address is fixed now. seems working correctly so far.

As for the state of Illinois is concerned, QB calculates tax only at the state level and does not calculate the county and city taxes.   To work this around, I changed the shipping from address from my location (seller address) the same as the Ship to address (Customer address).  If I do this then it calculates all the state, county and city taxes.    Would QB able to fix this issue also.  I raised a ticket for this a year back but still did not have any solution yet.

The other state that has issues with is Louisiana.   Louisiana collects sales tax at state, county and city level like some other states.  the issue is the taxes are not calculated in one account like other states.  I have around Twenty-two new sales tax accounts for each and every county (Parish) that I have to pay salestax.  The drawback to this is I have to record the sales tax payment separately for each and every county even though I file one sales tax to state online.   Another issue is since I pay in time, they give an early payment discount.   Since the amount of sales are not that high, the discount works out ranging from 5 cents and the time taken to do this for all the counties individually is not worth the penny.  Would qb able to consolidate all the county (Parish) sales tax under one account - Louisiana State Sales tax account and give the report for all the counties.  like it is done for other states like Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina, Georgia etc.  It would save unbelievably a lot of time.

I am unable to paste an image here.   Can someone help on how to paste an image for future use.

QB team please help

Does anyone have a fix for recent sales tax calculation errors

Thanks for letting us know about your concern, KrishRaghav. I appreciate the steps you've taken so far to resolve this issue. Allow me to add details on how QuickBooks calculates sales tax.

QuickBooks automatically calculates total sales tax rates, including state and local components, based on the sale location or shipping address you provide in invoices or receipts. Learn more about this process through this article: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.

As for the state that only calculates state level, the program is unable to calculate or create custom state agencies. As a workaround, you'll want to process the payment directly to the municipal tax agency or file by mail and then record the transaction in QuickBooks.

Moreover, as you have already opened a ticket about this issue, I suggest contacting our support team again to check on the status of the automatic tax calculation feature based on the seller's address. They can pull up your records and provide you with updated information.

I'm also adding these articles about managing sales tax in QuickBooks. It contains topics to guide you through the process:

Effectively handling invoice sales tax is essential for ensuring compliance with tax agencies. You can always count on me if you need additional assistance handling invoice sales tax in the program. Leave your comment below by clicking the Reply button.

Does anyone have a fix for recent sales tax calculation errors

Thanks for responding.

My sales tax calculation is automated.  I understand how to enable to tax calculation.  You did answer the process of calculating sales tax but my question was for particular states and counties.  In my case it is IL.  Even this is fine I guess just changing the ship from address to the customer address (Ship to Address).   The biggest problem i have is with LA (Louisiana).   It has created an account for all the counties that I make active, and you will not believe how much time it takes to mark the sales tax as paid for each and every county.

This should be resolved asap.
