Help with splitting income

My invoice to a client covers
1. Work I've completed (taxable)

2. Expenses that I am claiming back

3. Wages for my assistant who doesn't charge tax

I know I can split the invoice but do I need to tick 'exclude' to ensure I'm not taxed on the wages I'm just passing on the cost for? Or is categorising it as Wages enough?

Help with splitting income

Hi there, hello12. I'm here to help you split your income in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

We can use the Split feature to assign the transaction to multiple categories. We have the option to split them between business and personal, as an amount or percentage.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Transactions.
  2. Locate the income you want to split.
  3. Click Split.
  4. You can split by Amount or Percentage by clicking the drop-down menu under Type. You can also add a line and choose multiple categories from one transaction.

For more details about the process, please see this article: Split transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I also recommend consulting an accountant to review and categorize the transactions in your books. Doing so ensures that everything is recorded properly. If you don't have an accountant, you can use our Find a ProAdvisor tool to look for an expert near you.

Please let me know if you need further assistance. I'm always here to help in any way that I can. Keep safe!
