How do I include 2 tax rates in one sales transaction (such as lodging tax and sales tax?

I created a combined tax rate as a work around, but QB Online then shows a double amount due for Lodging Tax on tax reports.

Thank you for visiting the QuickBooks Community, mountelbertlodge. Let me provide another alternative step to help you manage your sales tax in your transactions and achieve your goal.

Including two tax rates in a single sales entry is currently unavailable in QuickBooks. Each entry is only associated with a one-tax rate to ensure that everything is correct when filing.

I recommend splitting the sales transaction by creating another type of entry such as an invoice or sales receipt as another workaround. This way, you can allocate each as lodging tax and sales tax.

Here's how to create an invoice:

  1. Click + New and choose Invoice.
  2. Select Add customer and choose a customer from the dropdown arrow.
  3. Select Add product or service and select a product or service from the dropdown list.
  4. Choose the specific tax rate and fill in the other necessary information.
  5. Click Save and close.

Then, open this article to see the detailed steps on how to enter a sales receipt with tax: Create sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

Lastly, refer to this article to see information on how the Sales page helps you view the different statuses of all your sales entry: View sales transactions.

You can add a reply below if you have any other concerns about sales tax in QuickBooks. I'm always around to lend a hand, mountelbertlodge. Have a good day ahead.

How do I include 2 tax rates in one sales transaction (such as lodging tax and sales tax?

So QB is no longer a business software solution? I run a hospitality business, so every sale requires Lodging Tax AND Sales Tax in the same transaction. I could see that the QB Online program wouldn't let me enter 2 types of tax in the same transaction, so I did a work around of putting the two taxes into one as an additional tax choice. However, QB online state tax report is all messed up and nothing matches what the state shows I owe. It looks like QB is almost doubling the Lodging tax amount, but not exactly and I can't find any way to match up the discrepancies - or how to figure out why the Lodging Tax is doubled. If QB no longer supports a "two tax rates in one transaction function", then all shortterm rentals will need to look for new accounting software. This fatal change in QB software could cause me to have to amend my monthly tax returns due to errors caused by QB Online's inability to handle a simple function that QB Desktop has been able to manage for many years. If there really is a solution, PLEASE help.
