I’m currently using QuickBooks Online and have noticed an issue with the recent updates to the invoice template system. My business infrequently charges sales tax, but there are occasions when it’s necessary. However, I’ve observed that the “Sales Tax” line appears at the bottom of every invoice, even when no taxable items are present, showing a $0.00 amount.
Disabling the sales tax feature isn’t a viable solution, as we need the flexibility to apply it when required. Is there a method to hide or remove the “Sales Tax” line from invoices that don’t contain taxable items, while still maintaining the option to charge sales tax when needed?
I appreciate any insights or suggestions.
Hello, Greg. Thanks for reaching out regarding your experience with the recent updates to the invoice template in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I recognize how having a sales tax line appear on invoices even when there are no taxable items can be inconvenient.
In the Edit view of the invoice, the sales tax field is designed to always be visible, allowing customers to select and enter a tax rate for any taxable items. If the tax boxes for your products and services are left unchecked, you won't see any sales tax reflected in the invoices.
Thus, to ensure that no sales tax appears on your sent invoices, make sure the Tax box is unchecked for those non-taxable items.
Additionally, to ensure that the sales tax label does not appear on the invoice PDF, it's necessary to use the modern template instead of a custom one. This adjustment will help maintain the desired presentation of your invoice. Under the Manage, click Design, then tick the Modern radio button.

Thank you for your response, and your solution shown feels like what worked before this new version of the invoice UI. However, that doesn't match my current experience.
Please see two screenshots, one with the invoice in the Web UI, the second as the generated PDF with a zero sales tax shown. My objective is when there is no sales tax to not have the subtotal and $0 tax item listed when there are no taxable items on the invoice; this was the behavior prior to the update.
Thank you for your help/
Thanks for getting back to us and providing some screenshots, Greg. We appreciate your feedback about removing the subtotal and tax line when viewing the PDF file of your invoice. However, the ability to remove them is currently unavailable. You can send your idea or product suggestion within the program.
Based on the screenshot you've provided, it seems like you're currently utilizing the Fresh Template in QuickBooks Online for invoicing, with sales tax activated. As a result, a tax line appears when printing invoices, even for non-taxable items, due to the system's default settings.
If you would like to remove this tax description, we can submit a product suggestion to our engineering team for consideration. This may potentially lead to an option being added to omit these descriptions when printing invoices in the future.
To send one, here's how:

We are experiencing the same problem. I just spent the last 4 hours trying to come up with a solution but, I am still not having any luck. We tried the Modern view invoice but it has challenges of its own since it does not appear to allow progress billing displays a 'date' and 'product/services' column on the invoice which we don't want. Hoping IT can come up with a solution soon.
