Occupancy Tax

In its finite wisdom, QBO has changed the way sales taxes are handled.  Specifically occupancy taxes are completely messed up.  Also we can't even find our county occupancy tax as an option. Before this change we could have our sales taxes calculated with confidence.  Now we have to try to use our balance sheet to come of with some semblance of what our liability is.

This is COMPLETELY messed up!

Occupancy Tax

Hi, jlane91208. I understand how important it is to set the accurate sales tax for your specified county.

To further assist you with the occupancy tax, may I ask where your business specifically operates? This is to ensure that I provide you with the accurate resolution for your concern.

In the meantime, please know that QuickBooks Online automatically calculates sales taxes based on the following:

  • Your customer's tax-exempt status
  • Where you sell and where you ship
  • What you sell or the type of service that you're offering

It’s also worth noting that occupancy taxes is only required to some states or counties. That could be the reason why it's not showing up as an option on your end.

For more details, you can refer to this article: Learn how QuickBooks automatically calculates sales tax.

Occupancy Tax

While I appreciate your attempted response, I can assure you that your canned response is not very helpful.  Buncombe County North Carolina charges occupancy tax.  Before  you changed the sales tax, I was able to (accurately calculate this along with the county tax and the state tax.  Additionally my client operates in Washington Co VA, which also charges sales and occupancy tax..

Occupancy Tax

My client operates various businesses, including short term rentals in Buncombe County North Carolina and Washington County Virginia.  I can assure you that we are required to pay occupancy taxes in both locations.

Perhaps Intuit could talk to the local authorities and ask that QBO clients be exempt from occupancy taxes.  That would be real cool!
