QBO Advanced Automated Sales Tax Errors

One thing I have noticed is that when a discussion is started a response from a quickbooks team member is very fast.  However, in going over the boards, it has become clear that these first responses are not from humans, they are AI responses and they pick and choose words from your discussion that often have no relation to what is being requested.

That being said, Intuit has opened a can of worms and it needs to implement immediate fixes or it risks a major class action lawsuit from users that are given incorrect sales tax values by Intuit's automated sales tax system ... I know one of our customers that is a publicly traded company and is the largest in the world at what it does expects the correct sales tax to be charged on their transactions and the fact that Intuit has ignored 3 requests to fix the sales tax rate for Milwaukee has not gone unnoticed.

Intuit needs to give users the ability to notify its automatic sales tax calculation engineers of the incorrect rates so that the rates can be investigated and immediately fixed when they are incorrect.  A link within QBO would be most efficient method of communication and most errors would be corrected within a day if there was 24/7/365 monitoring of sales tax rate feedback from businesses.  Until that link is installed, Intuit needs an easily accessible thread for posting those rate deficiencies on its message boards and that thread should be monitored by humans and not AI bots responding Avatax is a great idea.

Now, for the fourth time in 3 weeks, the City of Milwaukee has the wrong sales tax rate in your automated calculations.  The correct rate is 7.9% (Just check avatax to see).  The 7.5% rate is clearly a typo in your database.  Please fix that error along with any other incorrect sales tax rates. Sales tax is not about getting close - it's about being accurate.

QBO Advanced Automated Sales Tax Errors

Hi there, Sales.

I acknowledge your challenges regarding the persistent miscalculation of sales taxes. Rest assured, I'm here to have this issue promptly addressed.

The accuracy of tax calculations is crucial. In QuickBooks, the total sales tax rate for every sale is automatically determined based on the following factors:

  • Your customer's sales tax exempt status.
  • Where you sell and where you ship.
  • Your service or product's sales tax category.

Further information is available in this article: Learn how QuickBooks Online calculates sales tax.

In addition, I am including these resources to assist you in monitoring your nexus states and filing your sales tax in the future:

If you need any assistance managing your sales taxes, I'm here to help.

I am well aware of how sales taxes are calculated as we have collected sales tax in more than 8 states in the past 6 years.  Your automated sales tax software in not properly calculating the sales tax for Milwaukee because the rate data is incorrect in Intuit's rate database. Intuit's engineers need to get off their rear ends and fix the error in its Intuit's database for the City of Milwaukee and I've attached screen captures showing Intuit's error against Avalara's correct calculation.

When we uploaded our file from Premier to Online 3 weeks ago we caught the rate calculation error for Milwaukee within minutes.  Stop denying the issue and fix the issue.  I don't need a lecture on how sales tax is calculated.  I need Intuit to fix its programming error for Milwaukee.

QBO Advanced Automated Sales Tax Errors

I'm having the same problem with the automated tax rate in Barry County Missouri....

The automated tax should be charging 6.725% and they are charging 6.225%...they are not even adding the ambulance tax to the rate...which is 0.50%

The "help" people need more training, or need to understand what you are having problems with.

When I told them the problem was with the automation...they wanted to check the tax rate I had entered manually into QBO.

They need to be able to send you to someone who knows what you are talking about...

I still don't know how to get this problem solved.

Thank you for reporting the issue you experienced with automated sales tax calculation in the thread, @maggieks123

I recognize that the ambulance tax rate should be included in QuickBooks Online's (QBO) automated combined tax rate calculation for Barry County in Missouri. I can share a step-by-step guideline for adding a custom rate or overriding the tax rate as a workaround and the steps to resolve this in the future.

In the meantime, you can consider entering a custom tax rate to create a combined tax rate for Barry County tax jurisdiction. Here's how:

  1. In your QBO account, go to Taxes.
  2. In the Custom rates section, select Add rate.
  3. Choose Combined.
  4. Enter an appropriate name for the custom rate. In each of the rates, choose the Missouri Department of Revenue.
    a. Rate 1 - enter 4.225 for the Missouri State.
    b.
Rate 2 - enter 2 for the Missouri, Barry County.
    c. Rate 3 - enter the rate for the city which also levies sales taxes if applicable.
    d.
Rate 4 - enter 0.5 for the Barry Co South Barry County Ambulance District Sp.
  5. Select Save.

When creating an invoice or sales receipt, scroll down to the Select tax rate section and choose the custom rate you've recently added. I've added screenshots for reference.

Alternatively, you can also choose the Override this amount from within the invoice. Here's how:

  1. In your invoice or sales receipt window, scroll down and select See the math.
  2. Select Override this amount.
  3. Calculate and enter the rate of the sale manually.
  4. Choose the Reason.
  5. Click on Confirm, then Close.

I understand that you've contacted our Support Team. However, I'd still encourage reaching out to them to open an investigation case for our Product Engineers to correct the Barry County Tax rate calculation in QBO's future updates.

For future reference, let me add this guide for recording sales tax payments in the QBO's sales tax center: Manage sales tax payments in QuickBooks Online.

Keep us posted if you still need assistance correcting tax rate calculations in QBO. We'll do our best to assist.

In the time it took you to copy/paste that response to the user listing the error, you could have corrected the error in Intuit's system.  Why not just take the two minutes to correct the errors in Intuit's database?
