Example 1: Cases Where Both Shipping From and Shipping To Locations Have 4 or More Tax Components

Shipping From: Katy Mills (Katy)

Address: 5000 Katy Mills Cir, Katy, TX 77494

Tax Breakdown:

• State Sales Tax: 6.25%

• City of Katy Tax: 1%

• Fort Bend County Special Tax: 0.5%

• Metropolitan Transit Authority Transit Special Tax: 1%

• Improvement District Special Tax (Katy Development District): 0.5%

Total Sales Tax (Shipping From): 9.25%

Shipping To: Frisco

Address: 2601 Preston Rd, Frisco, TX 75034

Tax Breakdown:

• State Sales Tax: 6.25%

• City of Frisco Tax: 1%

• Collin County Special Tax: 0.5%

• Denton County Transit Special Tax: 0.5%

• Economic Development Special Tax (Frisco Economic Development): 0.5%

Total Sales Tax (Shipping To): 9.25%

The total sales tax rate is applied separately for each location (Shipping From and Shipping To). In this case, shipping from Katy to Frisco involves five tax components at each location.

Issue with QBO AST: When using QBO AST, only three detailed tax items are displayed, and the tax rate appears different.

Let's work hand in hand to sort out this issue with your sales tax rates in QuickBooks Online (QBO), woatm74.

When creating sales receipts or invoices, QBO calculates the sales tax based on the following criteria:

  • Your customer’s tax-exempt status
  • Where you sell and where you ship
  • Your service or product’s tax category

Based on the addresses you've provided above, the system only detects three addresses from the comptroller where you need to collect sales taxes.

Alternatively, you can override the sales tax directly on the transaction. It helps account for rounding differences. Here's how:

  1. In your invoice or sales receipt, select See the math
  2. Click Override this amount
  3. Before entering the adjustment, read the provided options and steps. Then, enter the desired rate or amount.
  4. Choose a reason for making the change, then select Confirm
  5. Select Save

If you want to see the sales tax you overrode, select See the math again to see the adjustment.

I want to ensure that your opinions are heard and acted upon. I recommend sending them to our product developers to enhance your experience. Please follow the steps below:
