QBOL calculates sales tax accrual based on due date of invoice instead of the sales date

I'll start out by saying that I'm relatively new to QBOL. I have a new client, and his sales tax accrual is being based on the due date of the invoice instead of the actual sales date. Is there a way this can be changed?

I understand the importance of having the correct sales tax records, Twistedn2.

The accounting method will affect how sales tax is calculated and reported in your financial statements and tax filings. If you opt for the cash method, sales tax will be recognized when you receive payment. On the other hand, if you choose accrual, sales tax will be recognized at the time of the sale, regardless of whether payment has been received.

Let's correct the reporting method to fix the dates. Beforehand, consult an accountant to ensure everything will remain accurate after the changes.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Taxes menu.
  2. Select Sales Tax Settings.
  3. Choose the tax agency you used for that invoice and click Edit.

  4. Change the reporting method to Accrual.
  5. Click Save to reflect the changes.

If the method is correct, I recommend accessing your QuickBooks Online account via a private window. It is a good place to determine if this is a browser-related issue. Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + N

Once logged in, check the dates. If it works, clear the browser's cache to ensure the program performs efficiently. Otherwise, you can use other supported browsers. They also provide the best and most secure experience with QuickBooks.

Moreover, I've added a resource that can help you add and edit agencies, rates, and settings: Set up your Sales Tax in QuickBooks Online.

Furthermore, you can get a detailed look at the taxes you owe by running the Sales Tax Liability report. It can also help you ensure everything is accurate before you file your return to your tax agency.

Please know that we're thrilled to have you on board. We're always available to assist you every step of the way and are committed to providing you with the best possible experience.
