Upgrade to newer versions of QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise

Learn how to upgrade to a newer version QuickBooks Desktop.

If you have an annual subscription or need to upgrade a one-time purchase of QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, QuickBooks Desktop Premier Plus, or QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise, we’ll show you how.

How to upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop subscription

When a new version is available, you'll get a message when you open QuickBooks.

  1. When you’re ready to start, select Upgrade Now.
  2. Select the Keep old version on my computer checkbox if you also want to keep your current version of QuickBooks. Then select Let’s go. QuickBooks downloads, installs, and registers the new version for you. It also creates an updated version of your company files.
  3. When the upgrades finished, select Open QuickBooks.

Note: The upgrade may take some time depending on your internet speed and size of your company files.

Do you have an annual subscription, but don’t see a prompt to upgrade?

Option A: Bring back all one time messages

Usually, the lack of an upgrade prompt happens because the option to not show the prompt again was selected. Here’s how to get it back:

  1. Go to the Edit, then select Preferences.
  2. From the General tab, select My Preferences.
  3. Select the Bring back all one time messages checkbox.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Close, then re-open QuickBooks. You’ll then have the prompt to upgrade your QuickBooks subscription.

Option B: Get the latest version

You can also get the latest version of QuickBooks desktop directly via QuickBooks Desktop Manager, through which you can select and install all your QuickBooks products.

How to upgrade if you don’t have a QuickBooks Desktop subscription

If you don’t see a prompt to upgrade, don’t worry, It means you made a one-time purchase of QuickBooks. You can still upgrade using the easy upgrade tool. Here’s how.

  1. From the Help menu, select Upgrade QuickBooks.
  2. If you’re already using Quickbooks, select Upgrade Now.
  3. Select the version you want to upgrade to, then select Upgrade Now.
  4. If you want to keep your current version, select Keep old version on my computer, then select Let’s go.

QuickBooks will download, install, and register the new version for you, and then create an updated version of your company file.

Option A: Locate and enter your license number

If you’re not prompted to choose a new QuickBooks version, you’ll need to enter your QuickBooks license info. This is usually because QuickBooks was bought using a different email than what you use for your QuickBooks Desktop account. Here’s what to do.

  1. Find the purchase confirmation email from QuickBooks.
  2. Enter the License Number and Product Number, then select Continue to finish the upgrade.

Option B: Get the latest version

You can also get the latest version of QuickBooks desktop directly via QuickBooks Desktop Manager, through which you can select and install all your QuickBooks products.

You can also sign into the customer account maintenance portal (CAMPs) to find your info.

If you need to purchase QuickBooks Desktop

If you need to purchase QuickBooks, you can purchase it here. After you purchase QuickBooks, you can start the upgrade tool.

As the account owner or admin, you can install QuickBooks for yourself or others. If you are a standard user, you can only install QuickBooks for yourself.

Installing QuickBooks for Right Network account owners and admins:

  1. Sign in to Right Networks My account with your email address and password.
  2. Select the Users tab.
  3. Select the specific user you wish to apply the license to.
  4. Within the user detail page, select the Apps you can install tab.
    Note: Right Networks displays all QuickBooks versions available to you. Use the search bar to quickly find the version.
  5. Select the correct QuickBooks version, then select Install in the pop-up that follows. After you do so, the button tells you of the installation while the shortcut appears on the desktop.

The user may need to sign off and on again to access the new QuickBooks installation. 

Installing QuickBooks for Right Networks standard users:

  1. Sign in to Right Networks My account with your email address and password.
  2. Select the Apps you can install tab.
  3.  Use the search bar to quickly find the QuickBooks version you need to install, then select the app.
  4. Select Install App in the pop-up that follows. After you do so, the button tells you of the installation while the shortcut appears on the desktop.

The next time you log into the remote environment using your assigned email address and password you'll see the QuickBooks application on your desktop. If you don't see it, try re-adding the application. You may need to sign off and on again to access the new QuickBooks installation.
