Where are you trying to backup your company to? Local hard drive, network drive, online, thumb drive? Also, are you using the manual backup (File > Backup...), or is this the automatic backup. If it's with the automatic backup, what does your Backup Preferences have setup in there (QuickBooks > Preferences > Backup)? If the location it is trying to backup to cannot be reached then this could cause this situation (usually you would get some sort of a notification about it). Also, is your company file on the local hard drive or in a shared environment on a network somewhere? If it is is located somewhere else, you could try copying the file to the local system, open the copy and see if it will backup at that point.
