One of our core goals is to help accounting professionals serve their clients, and we’re continually updating QuickBooks Online Payroll to make it better for you, your clients, and their employees. Over the last year, our teams worked to ensure QuickBooks continues to deliver reliable and powerful tools that help accountants like you provide your services, all while enhancing compliance with the latest Canadian regulatory requirements for payroll and taxation.
In our ongoing effort to ensure the quality of QuickBooks Online Payroll, we take your feedback seriously. We listen, we discuss, and we get right to work making improvements so you can do even more with Payroll. Here’s the latest:
1. Experience true end-to-end correction: Tax Slip Adjustments
Save crucial time during year-end with Tax Slip Adjustments, allowing you to quickly make necessary adjustments that will flow T4 slips without having to alter prior paycheques. Furthermore, the upcoming feature enhancements will provide a seamless, self-serve solution via adjustment paycheques, allowing for comprehensive in-product T4 correction that automatically provides a traceable audit trail of the changes made and seamlessly updates the T4 XML that you download from QBO.
2. Better navigation and filing in the simplified payroll tax centre: Enhanced RL-1 support
Anything to make tax filing easier. The refreshed and streamlined tax centre brings a significant enhancement, particularly for our Quebec-based ProAdvisors. The main improvement is the ability to file and remit payroll taxes electronically with both the CRA and Revenu Québec, right in QuickBooks.
QuickBooks now calculates and fills out both T4 and RL-1 forms for you, so they’re ready to print and file when the time comes**. Furthermore, if your client has closed their business, you can still use QuickBooks to prepare the tax forms required for Close of Business filings.
3. Project and Department Tracking: Introducing Class Costing
Get more insightful reporting with the ability to track payroll expenses using classes and locations. This is especially useful for clients who need detailed reporting for jobs, departments, projects, or cost centres, allowing for better management of budgets and expenses.
How: When running payroll, simply select the relevant class or location for each employee's paycheque. You can then use your QuickBooks reports to break down your payroll expenses by class or location
**Only available for QuickBooks Online Premium and Elite**
4. Better than an undo button: Paycheque corrections are here
Now you can correct errors, keep accurate records, and exhale a sigh of relief with the ability to edit, delete, and void employee paycheques in a few clicks—right in QuickBooks.
How: Go to Payroll and then Employees, select Paycheque list, and then select the dropdown under the Action column where you’ll select Edit for a specific paycheque. If you have any issues, such as if the paycheque has a pay date from prior to January 1 of this year, contact us and we’ll help you fix it.
5. Who’s paying? Up to you. More flexibility and control with split billing
Decide on a case-by-case basis who pays for each QuickBooks product—your firm, or your client. Let’s say you’d like to keep paying for your client’s QuickBooks Online subscription because it’s a fixed cost, but you’d rather your client pay for any other add-on products you recommend, or those with variable fees like QuickBooks Online Payroll.
How: Just go to the Subscriptions and billing page and select the Client actions dropdown menu to make changes.
6. No more one-by-one edits: Bulk actions
Get more done in less time by editing payroll items for multiple employees at once.
How: When you select Edit payroll items, you’ll have the option to select multiple employees with checkboxes, select Edit, and then update the fields—which will apply to all employees assigned to the item.
7. Auto-match it: Automatically match each paycheque to its transaction
Yet another time saver. Normally when you download bank transactions, new ones must be matched manually. Or, QuickBooks can do this for you. Once payroll is processed, QuickBooks automatically matches each paycheque to its respective transaction in your client’s bank feed**.
How: Just go to Transactions and select Bank transactions. In the Categorized tab, select Settings ⚙️ and turn on automatic matching. No need to chase down paycheque numbers or transactions—it’s all automated.
Get it all done in one place, faster
With our latest refinements, QuickBooks gives you even more ways to efficiently manage your client’s accounting, payroll, and time tracking**—all from one financial management system. Additionally, QuickBooks Payroll sets you up for success every month with:
- Direct deposit that lands as fast as the next day**
- Phone and online support at no additional cost Monday through Saturday**
- Competitive pricing that’s simpler than complicated pay-per-run pricing
