Categorization for deposit of personal funds into LLC account

Hi,

I have a small single member LLC with an S tax filing status. I have deposited funds into the business account for years from my personal account but now I am concerned that I have not categorized them properly. How should these transaction be properly recorded in QB? Is the check register entry supposed to be me (as the funds are coming from me to the business) or the business itself as it is receiving the funds and I am the payor (sender) and the business is the payee (receiver).

Sorry, this might be a stupid question but the more I try to figure this out the more confused I become!

Categorization for deposit of personal funds into LLC account

It's completely valid to be concerned about ensuring everything is recorded accurately in QuickBooks, as they directly affect your business's financial health, @Deadeye1985. I'd be more willing to help you sort this out.

When you deposit personal funds into your LLC account in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), you should categorize these transactions correctly to maintain accurate financial records.

To begin with, let's record the deposit:

  1. Open your QBDT company.
  2. Go to the Banking menu and select Make Deposits.
  3. If the Payments to Deposit window appears, click OK to proceed.
  4. In the Deposit To field, select your LLC business bank account.
  5. In the Received From column, enter your name (as the individual contributing the funds).
  6. In the From Account column, choose an appropriate equity account, such as Owner's Equity or Owner's Contributions. This reflects that the funds are coming from you as the owner and not as revenue.

  7. Enter the amount deposited and add a memo if needed.
  8. Click Save & Close.

To ensure the deposit will be accurately reflected, let's view the register:

  1. Go to the Banking tab and click Use Register.
  2. Choose the LLC business bank account in the Select Account dropdown.
  3. Click OK.
  4. The entry appears as a deposit in the business account. Although you're the payor, it reflects the business receiving the funds.

Also, consulting an accountant for personalized advice on categorizing personal fund deposits into an LLC can provide valuable insights. Their expertise will also guide you confidently through the process.

Here's an article you may use in the future that enables you to customize any generated report in QBDT. You can modify the data, add or remove columns, adjust header/footer information, and personalize the font and style: Customize reports in QBDT.

If I can be of any additional assistance with recording or categorizing deposit transactions, please don't hesitate to insert a comment below. I'll be available to help you quickly and efficiently whenever you need help.
