Customer Default Sales Tax Tab

I have googled about adding a default sales tax for each customer and have read that there is a tab to show that a customer is taxable, but on my screen there is only a tab under sales tax that has a check mark for exempt sales tax. Why is my online program not showing this feature for each of my customers?

Hello @mimidawnn,

Welcome to the Community. I can share some clarification about the tax feature in QuickBooks Online.

If you're referring to the Default customer sales tax rate in QuickBooks Online article, the steps are only applicable to users with manual sales tax. For those using Automated Sales Tax, you can use custom rates on invoices and receipts.

For the detailed instructions, check out this page: Set up and use automated sales tax in QuickBooks Online.

I've also attached an article you can use to learn how to enter a custom rate in QuickBooks: Use custom rates to manually calculate taxes on invoices or receipts.

Fill me in if you have additional questions about tracking sales tax in QBO. I'm always here to help. Take care always.

Is there any way to do away with the automated sales tax and go with a customer individual rate number that I can put in their profile. That way, I don't have to look to see the rate for each customer in the location box on invoice?

Joining the thread to answer your question about tracking sales tax in QBO, mimidawnn.

The Automated Sales tax is the default settings in QuickBooks Online and there's no option to turn if off at the moment. You'll need to manually select the custom rate that you set up when creating  an invoice or sales receipt.

We'll have taken note of your feedback about the automated sales tax function. You can also visit this site where you can see all the latest updates and newly added features i QuickBooks Online: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/blog/.

You can also run the Sales Tax Liability report to view the sales tax data. This makes sure that everything is accurate before filing your return to your tax agency.
