Do I need a server to operate in Multi User Mode?

I have been having trouble trying to figure out how to set up Multi User Mode in Quickbooks Pro 2014.  I work in a small office so only me and one other employee will be accessing Quickbooks.  I understand that I need to purchase a seperate license number in order for both of us to access and work on the same company file at the same time, but I am not sure what else I need to do to link my laptop and her desktop.  From what I've read online and in the help section it seems like I may need to get a server (or convert an old PC to a server) but before I purchase anything I want to make sure that this is actually what I need.  Does anyone have any insight on this issue?  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thank you in advance to anyone that may be able to help me better understand what I need to do from here.

Do I need a server to operate in Multi User Mode?

Good day riki@epg!

I appreciate the details you've provided.

When you set up QuickBooks for Multi-User access, you have multiple options for the setup procedure. You can choose between having a dedicated server computer, or using one of your office workstations as the Host.

Please refer to this article for more information, and for detailed steps: Hosting your company data file in multiuser mode

Do I need a server to operate in Multi User Mode?

I am getting ready to upgrade from Quickbooks Pro 2016 to 2019. We have multiple users so currently, our Quickbooks company files, along with an installation of Quickbooks Pro 2016 reside on a computer running Windows Server 2003. As I understand it, Quickbooks 2019 will not work with Windows Server 2003 so I am going to have to move the company files to a compatible machine. I have read the article, https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Getting-Started/Host-your-company-data-file-in-multi-user-mo... , you referenced, and I think it answers my question, but before I make a decision on purchasing a new machine for this upgrade, I need a yes or no answer to the following questions: For multiple users to work with Quickbooks 2019 company files, rather than purchasing a new machine running the latest version or Windows Server, can the Quickbooks 2019 company files be hosted on a desktop machine running Windows 10 Pro?

Thanks,

Dan Capps

Do I need a server to operate in Multi User Mode?

Hello there, danc.

Thanks for joining this thread. Allow me to help provide some additional information about the company data file in multi-user mode.

To answer your question, yes. One of the operating system requirements in QuickBooks Desktop 2019 is the Windows 10, all editions including 64-bit, natively installed1. You can use it when hosting your company data file in multi-user mode.

For additional reference, you can check this article to learn more about the QuickBooks Desktop system requirements

If you need further assistance with the process, I encourage you to contact our QuickBooks Desktop Chat Support Team. They have additional tools to pull up your account and do a remote session.

Do I need a server to operate in Multi User Mode?

Hi there, Deanna.

I've checked all the article links attached on this thread, and it seems like I was able to open them successfully. Let's perform the basic troubleshooting which is to open your browser in incognito/private mode to help determine if this is caused by a browser.

Here are the keyboard shortcuts to open a private browser:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl+Shift+N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Internet Explorer: press Ctrl+Shift+P
  • Safari: press Command+Shift+N

If you're able to view the links with private browser, I suggest clearing your browser's cache to start fresh. The next time you log in to QuickBooks Online, your browser will download fresh copies of everything you see on each page. Any cache-related issues should be cleared up.

Please let me know how it goes. You're always welcome to post if you have any other questions. Have a good one.
