Does anyone know how to edit an employee's class for export? I can edit their export accounts but not their class - the editable fields don't show up.

When I click on the edit field for exporting account I can change this easily. When I do the same for class, I can see a list of employees but there is nothing available for me to edit. It looks like a glitch in the system. Any help would be appreciated.

I'll work with you to resolve the employees' class information error you have In QuickBooks Online (QBO) Payroll, @tmyers1. This way, you can export your payroll data in no time.

This employees class information or exporting settings error can sometimes be caused by the browser's overtime collection of data from frequent page visits. To isolate this matter, you can perform some troubleshooting steps.

You can start by pulling up your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private browser (incognito). Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl Shift (Google Chrome)
  • Ctrl Shift (Firefox)
  • Control Option (Safari)

Once signed in, go to the Payroll Settings page and select the I use different classes for different employees option from the Classes section to edit class preferences. Please see the screenshots below for your reference.

If you're able to do so, return to your default browser and clear its cache. This will refresh the system and remove older data that causes viewing and performances issue. However, if this matter continues, I'd recommend using other supported browsers.

Also, there are several payroll reports you can use to view helpful information about your business finances and employees' details. To give you the complete lists of available payroll reports in QBO, I'd recommend checking out this article: Run payroll reports. It also includes steps about customizing, printing, and marking them as your favorite.

Please keep me posted on how it goes. In case you have other payroll and exporting concerns or inquiries about managing employees in QBO, let me know in the comments below. I'll gladly help. Take care always, @tmyers1.

Does anyone know how to edit an employee's class for export? I can edit their export accounts but not their class - the editable fields don't show up.

Thanks for the replay.  I logged on after adjusting my browser settings as you described.  When I click on payroll settings, the page looks very different than the screenshot you sent.  I will attach a screenshot.

By clicking on the edit section for export, I can get to a screen where I see classes (I will attach another screenshot).  But as you can see, there are no fields that I can edit to change the employee class.

Thanks for the reply.  After adjusting my browser settings as you described and clearing the cache, I logged on and navigated to the payroll settings page.  But for me, the page looks different.  I will post a screenshot.

Then, I select the edit button for the export section and I can get to a screen where the classes are shown and I edit classes.  But from the second screen shot, you can see that no fields are available to change.

Can you help me figure out how to make my payroll setting screen look like yours?  Is there another way to navigate there besides the little gear wheel in the upper right?

Thanks for the quick response, @tmyers1.

I appreciate the attached screenshot. I have one more step we can try, please check if your screen isn't in zoom-out mode? This is to check if you're able to see an OK button towards the bottom of the page. This button will lead you to change the employee class.

If you're still unable to edit the class, please contact our Payroll Support so we can investigate further. Here's how to reach out:

  1. Go to Gear.
  2. Select Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of the issue.
  4. Tap Continue.
  5. Click either Chat with us or Have us call you.

Additionally, here's a link that'll help you manage payroll-related tasks. It has our general payroll topics with articles. Feel free to browse: View all help for QuickBooks Online Payroll.

Please don't hesitate to reply to this thread if you have follow-up questions about payroll. I'll be around for you. Take care and stay safe.

No OK button, just a "continue" that takes me back to the former page.  So, when I get a minute I will start the chat.

I have been having this same problem. Some of the employees have class assigned, but the newer ones fo not because there are no fields to edit when I click on the edit classes pencil. I've cleared history and all Intuit related caches, switched browsers, - nothing changes.

I appreciate you for performing the troubleshooting steps, @MaryBethP.

Let me help assign classes to your employees in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First, let's create a class:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. From the Lists, click All Lists.
  3. Under Lists, select Classes.
  4. Click New.
  5. Enter the class name, check off the Is sub-class box (if applicable), then select Save.

Then, you can now assign the class to your employees. Let me walk you through the steps:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Click Payroll Settings.
  3. Under Preferences, select Accounting.
  4. Select your class preference, then hit OK.

If the issue persists, I'd suggest reaching out to our Customer Support Team. This way, they can pull up your account in a secure environment and initiate a screen share to look closely into this matter.

I've added this link about adding, deleting, and restoring classes in QuickBooks: Create and manage classes in QuickBooks Online.

Let me know if you have other questions about the class feature. I'm always here to help. Wishing you and your business continued success.
