How can I migrate my information from QB Self-employed to QB Online?

Today I upgraded from QB Self Employed to Online. The salesperson I chatted with recommended this. I was trying to merge/sync my QB data to my TurboTax form. She told me

1) I could do this with Online, but not SE.

2) I could upgrade to Online and import all my SE data.

3) I could then import my info to TurboTax.

Right now all I want to do is get my SE info to O so I can get moving. Currently I'm stuck.

Thanks in advance,

Matt.

How can I migrate my information from QB Self-employed to QB Online?

Hi redheaddiesel,

QuickBooks Online Self-Employed is different from other types of QuickBooks products. There isn't a way to automatically convert the data from QuickBooks Self-Employed into another QuickBooks product.

You can download a .csv file for your transactions and import them to QuickBooks Online Simple Start, QuickBooks Online Essentials, or QuickBooks Online Plus. Please check this article for more information: https://selfemployed.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/453178.

The link is also blank for myself - can you provide a better link? I’m also interested in moving from SE to QBO.

Your thoughts about the product is important to us, Amanda.

This would help our Product Development Team know what are the things the needs improves to suit your needs. I'll let them know about these ideas so they can put it into consideration for future product updates.

For now, we can export your transactions from QuickBooks Self-Employed through this article:

Export Transactions and Trips to .CSV.

Then, import them to QuickBooks Online manually. You can refer to this article for the detailed steps and additional information: How To Import Bank Transactions Using Excel CSV Files.

Otherwise, you'll want to enter the transactions  one at a time.

For the existing lists, you can export and import them by following this article: Export then Import List Data into QuickBooks Online.

I'll be right here if you need anything else.

This is stupid.  Why in the world would these two products not communicate?!

I don't want to pay all this money and spend the time entering data in the field on QB Self Employed to only have to do the same data entry when I get home.  What is going on?

I completely agree. I used QBSE for all of 2018 downloaded all of my transactions and when I started importing data to QBO it was completley useless.

I've just spent the last 3 hours importing data manually to QBO so I can hopefully get my taxes done today.

QUICKBOOKS, you need to create an easy way to import data from QBSE to QBO, keeping my data in QBSE for a year was pointless after all of this work.

Same!!

This doesn't make much sense that they don't link. My biggest issue is with Invoices. If I have created an Invoice in QB Online how do I get QBSE to see that same invoice as an invoice??

Does QB online connect to TurboTax?? I would just rather ditch SE if it isn't helpful and Online has Tax links.

The double work is frustrating for a start-up company because it seems to be a waste of efforts and not very efficient for a small business owner.

Would really appreciate a time table for the upgrade/connection.

Hello there, pegasusqc,

QuickBooks Online and QB Self-Employed are two different products. We appreciate your feedback and suggestions.

QB Online connection with TurboTax is unavailable. It's only QBSE which offers to export your data directly to TurboTax.

You can check out this article for more information: Send your tax info to TurboTax Online (Self-Employed or Live).

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Intuit created QBSE as a quick and dirty solution, without regard to the real, future needs, rope you in at $5/moth then at the first quarter you'll be told you need to do quarterlies and then they'll move you from $5/moyh to $17 (yep, the $12 price is only good for the first 3 months you own QBSE). You doin't need the tax bundle until after the third month). And QBSE it is a misnomer. It was intended to be a cheap solution, with a path to taxes as well, to grab market share for those who suddenly find themselves "self-employed" in the new Uber/Lyft/Instacart/Amazon Prime delivery market. It is a separate profit center with lowered overhead, no phone number to call, and no advance revealing that you can't upgrade easily. Worse, the mileage tracking is only available in QBSE, NOT in any of the other products. It is really not a complete product for most selective-employed people as the features are so minimal, you'd have a hard time keeping track of customers, jobs, inventory, etc. It probably works fine for those who only drive for a living. And don't think you can down grade from one level of QBSE to another; they told me you'd have to start over, with a new account. I WOULD NOT suggest QBSE until Intuit gets it act together and integrates the apps, and even offer mileage tracking for all their apps.

How can I migrate my information from QB Self-employed to QB Online?

Hello, @JM8787.

I'm glad to share some information about migrating data from QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

Yes, currently we don't have the direct way to automatically export data from QBSE into another QuickBooks product. If you wish to keep a record of the work you did in QBSE, you can download the Tax Details report which can be found on the Reports page.

Also, you may download your transactions directly from the Transactions tab into a .CSV file and import it into QBO. However, importing the downloaded transactions in .CSV format into QBO requires a 3rd party service. QBO only allows the direct import of Customers, Vendors, Chart of Accounts, Products and Services in .CSV format.

To know more, you can read this article: Switch to another version of QuickBooks from QuickBooks Self-Employed.

You can also check this article for your future reference about moving data from QBSE to QBO: Move from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online.

Keep posted if you have any other questions. I'm always here to help!

hi @JM8787

Utilize the trial period of a 3rd party migration tool to import your CSV into QBO.

Hope it helps.

Intuit and Quickbooks still haven't figured out how to transfer the data!  It's been a year and no progress at all!  If you plan on signing up for Quickbooks - realize that you will lose most of your data.  Good luck!

This is total BS!  Quickbooks this is an absolute shame.  I spent the whole 2019 year in Self Employed, my accountant told me that I need to upgrade to Simple Start due to growth in my business.  I found out that these two systems don't talk and now I have to re-do whole year of entries.  What a crock of SH*T.  Your engineering and management teams should be ashamed of this!  Unacceptable!

Really Im going to ask for a refund of my payment, if I had only know that the QB SE options didnt allow me to submit my tax return and I wasted all the time i had available importing the information manually, cause there was no help with the CSV files, everything is so complicated, i think I will just submit a Self assessment through HRMC its a nightmare but not as huge as this QBSE not having an option, this is really not acceptable

I sent a product suggestion to our engineers about filing returns to HMRC, NunoGois.

Meantime, you can use our available reports that you can view, download or export, and use it as a reference in manually filling out the return.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Select the correct date/tax year under the report you'll want to view.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow beside View to have options on how to manage the report, or click Download.

What do you mean the community is always here to help? your products are junk when you can't sync them together. I bought SE now after a year i need to upgrade and there's no migration tool or option for mileage. I'm a tradesman and I travel and the mileage is a large part of my tax deduction since i'm self employed. I've seen this posted in here for over a year and your so called engineers have failed as well. Time to look for another option.

Hi Cude2008,

I appreciate you for sharing your feedback with migrating QBSE data to QBO.

We don't take this lightly and recognize its impact to our customers. While we don't have a direct tool to transfer data from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online, you can consider checking for third-party apps that handles data conversion between QuickBooks platforms..

Visit our applications website here: https://apps.intuit.com/app/apps/home

Having the ability to move Mileage automatically after upgrading a QBSE account to QBO is convenient when added to the program. I'm making it my top priority to send this request to our developers.

If you need additional help, feel free to reach out to me. I'm always here to provide further assistance with anything QuickBooks related. Have a good one!

This is ridiculous! You’ve done nothing in over a year. I’ve watched these threads and as the end of year approached, I thought they would resolve it by tax season.  Intuit owns and produces all of these products including TurboTax but I can’t get the products to talk to each other? It’s simple programming to have them import from one to another. You're going to lose me as a customer.

Has anyone looked at other bookkeeping software that interacts and most importantly lets me import into tax software? Intuit has dropped the ball. It’s time to drop them.
