I chose nonprofit for the Business type when I set up our company, but I need to change it to "other". I need to know how to get back to the company page I created.
Solved! Go to Solution.
"Business Type" is a setting you select in the interview process, to give you two things:
Starting setup <== this is all in your file now, you add, delete, rename and refine
Tax line mapping <== this is based on the business Tax entity Type
There is no "going back" to the Interview. It controls Nothing. Everything is in your file.
If the issue is the Tax line Mapping, which is only a function of "I intend to import this QB data file into Turbo Tax or one of the other Intuit professional tax preparer programs" and it bothers you that it is the wrong tax form, you go to Company menu > My Company (or, it might show as Company Info; they keep changing the wording) and top right is a Pencil Tip = Edit. Change the Tax Mapping here for the Tax Entity type.

If it is due to the type of chart of accounts pulled in how do I change it?
Hello there, NVLCCD.
I agree with qbteachmt. You can no longer modify your Company's Business Type. However, you can change the Income Tax Form Used by clicking the new tax form from the drop-down list in the Report Information section
Here's how:
Also, may I know what do you mean when you say if its due to the Chart of Accounts (COA) pulled? Are you trying to change an account type from the COA accounts? If so, you can edit it by following the steps below:

I have a question. I am a quickbooks online proadvisor and I have a client who has Quickbooks desktop Pro 2020. This client is a 5013C so there should be no social security and medicare employer portion calculating. However, when we run payroll it's calculating SS and Med for employer and employee. I checked that the tax form is setup properly and it is.
I don't know if the company type is set to 501 3C so how can I turn off employer portion calculation for payroll? I went to payroll item list and tried to uncheck the pastor from the list but it would not let me.
What is the best way to get their company and payroll setup for 501 3C so it does not calculate SS and Med taxes on their payroll ??
Thank you,
Thanks for joining the thread, @lehightee.
We can only change the report information in QuickBooks Desktop, and it does not affect payroll tax calculation. We're unable to exempt the employer from the Med and SS taxes. We can exempt the employee, however, both taxes will not calculate on paychecks.
If they're not required to pay Medicare and Social Security, you can enter zero in the SS and Med field under the Company contribution part when you create a paycheck.
Feel free to browse this link on how to create a paycheck: How do I create a paycheck for an employee?

Good evening,
Is there a way to view what your business and industry type is once you enter it? I don't want to make any changes to it, I just want to view it.
Hello there, mnalaboff.
I can help you with that. Simply go to the Company menu and select My Company.
I'm adding a screenshot for your visual reference:
There you have it! If you have any other questions, I'm just a post away.
@GlinetteC , so where's the industry type on your screenshot?
Good morning,
Yes, I have that information, but I'm looking for my industry type. I formed the company years ago, and I want to view it.
Good morning, @my-answer-is-nonsense and @mnalaboff.
Thank you both for checking here in the QuickBooks Community for support and following up with us.
You can change your industry type from your File menu and your Help menu. Let me walk you through some steps below to do change the industry.
From the File menu:
From the Help menu:
That should do it. For additional details about this process, check out Toggle to another QuickBooks Edition.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I'm always around to lend a hand. Take care!
@Tori B , that's definitely NOT the right answer. That's a setup in quickbooks which doesn't have a connection to a company file. You can even change the edition while no company file is opened.
Let's say I created a company file and chose Sole proprietor for the business type and Lodging for the industry type.
We know where to check the business type, so where can I see the industry type after setup?
Good to see you here in the Community, my-answer-is-nonsense.
After setting up your QuickBooks Desktop, you'll find the industry type through the File menu. Let me guide you on how:
I recommend visiting this link: Account Management. These will provide links about managing your QuickBooks Desktop account, users, password, and billing.
Keep me posted by leaving a comment below if you need additional assistance. I'll be here to help. Have a good one.
@Rose-A you just repeated what Tori said. I said the edition has nothing to do with the industry type of a company file.
Haven't you experienced creating a company file and choosing a business type and an industry type?
How about you try it? Choose Lodging as the Industry type. Then, show me where to find that "Lodging" after saving your setup.
Is there any update on this?
I was told I don't have an industry type.
Did they tell you where to check it?
Unfortunately, no.
Hello @mnalaboff,
I appreciate you for reaching out to us here in the Community. Allow me to chime in and share information about viewing the business and industry type in QuickBooks Desktop.
I've checked the thread and understand you're referring to the industry when creating a company file (see screenshot below). Currently, the ability to view what you've chosen during the interview process is unavailable.
Once you've selected your industry type, the system will create the default accounts automatically. You can view other information like the Income Tax Form and other details under My Company, but the industry type will not show.
As long as your chart of accounts is accurate, your company file should be fine. The purpose of the industry is to help you create the accounts and relate them to the type of business you're operating in QuickBooks.
Additionally, you can use this link as your reference if you want to start a new company file in QuickBooks: Create a QuickBooks Desktop company file.
Please don't hesitate to drop a comment if you have any other questions about your company file. I'll be happy to help you some more.
@AlcaeusF thank you. This is the answer that we're looking for.
