How to restore a deleted account so I can modify an old transaction assigned to that old deleted account?

I was about to edit a bill payment to apply it to the correct invoices paid, however, edits were not saved because an old invoice was assigned to an old deleted account. I cannot see restore option in the Chart of Accounts page or see deleted accounts. I also cannot see it in the Audit log. How can I restore the account so I can avoid this error : Account assigned to this transaction has been deleted. Before you can modify this transaction, you must restore (Old) (deleted) account.

I'm glad to help you reactivate your deleted account, Carreon.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), deleted accounts in the Chart of Accounts are hidden by default. However, we can change the settings to unhide your previous account. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Go to the Gear icon.
  2. Under Your Company, select Chart of Accountsp5.png
  3. Click the small Gear icon.
  4. Check the box for Include Inactive.
  5. Hit the X icon. p4.png

After that, simply locate the account you want to use again, then select the Make active option. Additionally, for assistance in removing a deleted account from your QuickBooks Online reports, please refer to this link: Remove erased accounts from reports in QuickBooks Online.

If you have any other questions about your Chart of Accounts, please let us know. Have a wonderful day, and take care.

Let’s ensure your account is fully functional by activating it or addressing any browser-related issues that might be interfering with QuickBooks. Let’s handle this together to ensure everything works.

When reactivating inactive accounts in your chart of accounts, it’s vital to consider several factors to ensure a smooth and accurate process. Here’s a comprehensive overview:

  • Restoring Functionality: When you reactivate an account, it will reappear in your list of accounts and be available for use in new transactions.
  • No Data Loss: Reactivating an account doesn't erase or alter any previous transactions or data associated with that account.

If you’ve enabled the option to include inactive accounts in your chart of accounts, ensure that the specific account is activated by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to your Chart of accounts.
  2. Locate the account you wish to reactivate.
  3. In the Action column, select Make Active.

If activating the account didn’t resolve the issue, browser settings might be causing interference. Try the following steps to address this:

Use a private browsing window to bypass stored cached data:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If the issue is resolved after accessing your account through a private window, let's return to your regular browser and clear its cache to remove historical data affecting QuickBooks operations. You can also use other devices and supported browsers as alternatives.
