QuickBooks 2017 migrating to QuickBooks online

There doesn’t seem to be a very easy way to migrate QuickBooks 2017 Premier contractor to QuickBooks online. I’m guessing the program is so old that the standard migration procedures are not supported? Is there a way to migrate this version?

QuickBooks 2017 migrating to QuickBooks online

Hi there, briencolgan.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community. Let me discuss how migrating your data from QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to QuickBooks Online (QBO) works with the 2017 version. Then, ensure you can achieve this matter by performing the details below.

Migrating directly from QuickBooks 2017 to QuickBooks Online is currently unavailable. This is because QBDT 2017 is no longer supported and this discontinued version won't receive the latest security patches and updates.

However and as mentioned by Fiat above, when you use an older version of QuickBooks Desktop, you can install a trial version of QuickBooks 2021 and open your company file. That way, you're able to start moving your data from QBDT to QBO. Beforehand, I recommend making sure you have saved a backup copy of your company file

Once everything is ready, you can start following the steps below on how you can move your data.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in as an admin to the company file you need to import.
  2. Go to the Company menu and select Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  3. Choose Start your export.
  4. Sign in as an admin to your QuickBooks Online company.
  5. Select Choose online company and choose the QuickBooks Online company you want to replace with your company file.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. If you track inventory in QuickBooks Desktop, choose Yes to bring them over and specify the as of date. Otherwise, choose No if you want to set up new items later in QuickBooks Online.
  8. Enter Agree in the text field and select Replace.
  9. Click Yes, go ahead and replace the data and select Replace.

Lastly, I'm adding this article to further guide you in effectively managing your business using QBO: Help guide for QuickBooks Online. It contains topics about advanced accounting, banking, and payments to name a few.

Please know that I'm always around to help if you have other concerns about QBDT data migration and getting started with QBO. Take care, and I wish you continued success, briencolgan.
