Is there a way to show the P&L statement report with the "custom category" names that I've added?

I'm glad that you've considered editing the category amounts as an important function for your business. I'll guide you on how to send feedback for your custom categories, Dali748.

You'll use a Schedule C form to report your self-employed income and expenses. Thus, every time you categorize a transaction, QuickBooks Self-Employed matches it to a line on your Schedule C and that's the reason why you're unable to view them in your custom categories in your Profit and Loss and Business and personal expenses reports.

You'll want to let our product team know how this is helpful for your business by sending feedback. This will help improve your experience while using the program. To do so, you can follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Assistant menu.
  2. In the Type something... field, type in Submit Feedback.
  3. Select the Add a feature option.
  4. Type in your recommendation in the Type something... field after the Got it. What would you like to see added? question and click Enter.
  5. Click Yes to confirm.

I've added this handy article to give you a general guide and help you prepare your taxes: QuickBooks Self-Employed Annual Tax Guide.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, Dali748.

To verify my understanding, what are you referring to when you mention custom categories?

Once I have this information, I'll be able to do further research and see what options might be possible.

I'll be looking forward to hearing back from you. Have an awesome Thursday!

Is there a way to show the P&L statement report with the "custom category" names that I've added?

For example if you go under "Manage Categories" and click one the categories listed you can add a custom category there.  However, when I view the P&L statement report it rolls up my custom categories into the main category that it's listed under; so I'm not able to see a breakout of all the custom categories I created.

So is there a P&L statement report that I can run that shows my P&L statement broken out by the different custom categories I created so I can better verify that I have the correct expenses listed under those custom categories?

My pleasure to have you back, @Dali748. Thank you for sharing additional information about your concern. I'm here to give you insights about running your Profit and Loss statement in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

Your Profit and Loss report uses the expense categories that line up with the Schedule C tax form. Each time you categorize a transaction, QuickBooks matches it to the correct line on your Schedule C form. I understand that you want to see the breakdown of your categories to verify your expenses. At this time, you can open the Business and personal expenses instead. This data will show you all your expenses broken down by category.

Here's how:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Click on Reports on the left pane.
  3. Go to the Business and personal expenses section.
  4. Filter the dates, then select View.
  5. Review the information from there.

You may print or export your data by clicking on the Print or Export icon.

On the other hand, you can also get more hints while managing your financial reports in our system from here: Run balance sheet and profit and loss reports to manage your business.

I'm pleased to share these details with you today. If you have follow-up questions about your reports or statements, let me know by leaving a comment below. I'm always here to help. Have a good one!

Is there a way to show the P&L statement report with the "custom category" names that I've added?

This doesn't seem to work, when I view the "Business and personal expenses" report the "Business Expenses" section shows the same exact main/default categories that are listed under the "Profit and Loss report (aka Schedule C)".

The "Business and personal expenses" report does not show a breakout of the custom categories that I created within QBSE.

Hi there, @Dali748. I'm here to help you see the custom categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

Thanks for sharing some insights about the steps you've performed. When running the Profit and loss report in QBSE, you can only see all the categories that matches the line of your Schedule C. This may be the reason, you're unable to view those you've created. For more information, check out this article: Schedule C and expense categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

As a workaround, you can export the transactions assigned to that categories by going to the Transactions page. Here's how:

  1. In your QBSE account, select the Transactions menu.
  2. Next, select the correct Type, Account, Date, Tags, and Vehicles linked to those categories.
  3. Once ready click the Export icon.

You can also check this link to get additional details about custom categories in QBSE: Custom categories in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I'll include this helpful resource that you can read to provide guidance in calculating your taxes in QBSE: Automatically estimate your income tax in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

If you have any other concerns managing your categories in QuickBooks, please don't hesitate to add a reply below. I'm always here ready to lend you a hand. Have a good one and stay safe.

I like the ability to edit the category amounts live by clicking the amounts within the "Profit and Loss" and "Business and personal expenses" reports, I would just like to see these same reports with the ability of being able to view my custom categories and also the normal view it shows now.  Is this something that can be added in the future?

The export method you mentioned is a temporary workaround I can use but does make this more complex having to export the data instead of updating and viewing it directly on the QBSE platform.
