Moving a Non Profit to a new company/lic

I manage two non-profits that are part of our Catholic Church.  I only said Catholic because the accounting is handled differently than in other churches.  Last year one of the NPs incorporated and became its own 501c3 NP. When the Tech Soup(TS) license was up for renewal this year (Aug) I purchased a second lic from TS for the new NP and am using the old lic to put the other NP into QBO from the present QB desktop.  The question is how do you get the first NP copied over to the new license?  The article Make a copy of your QuickBooks Online Advanced company (intuit.com) was very helpful but missed a critical step that QB support could not resolve because the problem seems to be a known issue with QBO with no resolution it sight.  I am offering the resolution to Case INV-8428.

What the above article does not tell you is that you cannot copy a source company to a target company without the target company having Automatic Sales Tax enabled.  I'm a NP.  We don't sell anything.  We give money to those in need. Why would I turn on automatic sales tax for a NP like ours?  The solution is you have to turn it on in the target company, period.  Then the copy function works fine.  Ironically, the automatic sales tax function disappeared entirely in the target company after the copy was complete.

Since there doesn't seem to be any process instructions for doing something like this with NPs, i hope the forum will find this useful for anyone else who might struggle with this sort of problem.

I had the same issue but now that my data is migrated I am still seeing Sales Tax.  And there is no way to turn off sales tax.  We also are a nonprofit.  Why would the NP version of QB not allow a user to turn off Sales Tax?

You can't.  Intuit is not interested in fixing the problem and you'll burn too much quality lifetime worrying about it.  It doesn't hurt to leave it on if you dont sell anything and if you do, set it to .00001.  0 probably wont work.  There are too many other things to worry about like QB deleted all my EIN vendor IDs and could care less.  I fortunately had a paper copy but the 6 hrs to get them back in is not recoverable.

Last resort, buy a 3rd party service to migrate your data manually. This will take some time to complete but eliminates the sales tax issue completely.
