Transfer QBD license to new Accountant

Hello,

I just recently took over the books for a new client.  They had a previous bookkeeper that had their company file under her license.  How do I transfer the company file to my Accountants Desktop?

Thank you!

Transfer QBD license to new Accountant

Welcome to the Community space, @StartSmart.

I'm here to guide you on how to transfer the company file into your Accountants Desktop.

Here's how:

  1. We'll need to prepare the company file.
  2. Open the original version of QuickBooks of the previous bookkeeper.
  3. Press F2 to open the Product Information window.
  4. Look in the File Information section. Remember where you save your company file on your computer.

After performing the steps above, we'll now move your company file.

  1. Ensure all users sign out of your company file. Then, open your new version of QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Go to File, then select Open or Restore Company if you don't have your company file open.
  3. Select Open a company file, then Next. If you have a backup company file(QBB) instead of a company file (QBW), select Restore backup copy.
  4. Locate your company file. Select it and then choose Open. And if you can't find your company file, open the Windows Start menu and then File Explorer. Search for your company file by name or the .qbw file extension. If you can't find it, make sure it's not hidden.
  5. Sign in to your company file as the admin user.
  6. Optional: Quickbooks automatically creates a backup of your existing company file. You can choose the Change this default location to save a backup in a specific folder.
  7. Click Update Now. After QuickBooks finishes, select Done. Note: If the move fails and you can't open the file, restore the backup from step 7 and try again. If it fails again, contact customer support.

Don't hesitate to reply to this post if you have additional questions about managing your company file. I'll be more than happy to assist you. Keep safe and have a blissful week!

@StartSmart

Did your client purchase the license or just the service from the former accountant?

I purchased my own license and got a copy of the file from the previous accountant.

You should be able to restore the backup file on your machine. Did you encounter any problem?
