troubleshooting

I am using QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2017. I am trying to install the program on a new computer. When I restore the company file I get an error message -6094 that says "An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to start the database server that manages access to the QuickBooks company file."

It's a pleasure to have you in the Community today, @loispw. I've got your back, and I'll help you get through this so you can restore a company file in your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

Before we do so, I'd like to share that due to the file being old and transferred to another device, the anti-virus programs such as PC Tools Internet Security, AVG Anti-Virus, and SpyHunter Malware are blocking the process of restoring the company file.

That said, you'll have to ensure the anti-virus application in your computer is up to date. I'll input the steps below so you can proceed. For PC Tools Internet Security, these are the steps:To restore "infections" that have been quarantined:

  1. From the Settings menu, select Quarantine.
  2. Select the necessary items to restore, then choose Restore.
  3. Choose Yes, then OK.

To set up exception to prevent QuickBooks directory from being scanned:

  1. From PC Tools Internet Security menu, choose Settings.
  2. Select Global Action List, then choose Add to select the files to be excluded from scanning.
  3. Choose OK.

For further guidelines, please visit this article: Error -6094, 0 (6010, 2) An error occurred when QuickBooks tried to start the database.

After that, I'd recommend running the Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tools Hub. This way, we can ensure that your application doesn't encounter any error messages when restoring the company file. To do that, here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the most recent version (1.5.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can easily find it (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop). A reminder, if you've installed Tool Hub before, you can find out which version you have. Select the Home tab. The version will be on the bottom.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Please see this page for more information: Repair your QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

Once done, you can proceed to restore the file to your QuickBooks Desktop application. You can visit this article: Restore a backup of your company file.

In addition, I've got you this helpful article about fixing errors when accessing a file in QBDT: Error -6000, -82 or -6000, -106 when opening or accessing the company file.

You can also visit this article page in case you plan switch to a new version of QuickBooks, and you want to take your company files with you: Upgrade your company files after you switch to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop.

@loispw, if you need further assistance with this or have any additional QuickBooks-related concerns. Feel free to mention my name in the comment section. I'll make sure to get back. Take care, and have a nice day.
