Trying to run a sales report with a custom field we assigned to each inventory item. The custom field column is blank on the sales report by item detail. Why no data?

I tried adding the custom field column to the invoice thinking that would solve the problem on the report. When I did this, it does not populate the info we assigned to each item, it provides a drop down menu to select info. Seems like the double the work when we have already assigned the data to the item in inventory list.

Hi melainag,

You'll want to make sure that you've used custom item fields to track your product and services information.

Here's how:

  1. Click Lists on the upper menu.
  2. Select Item List.
  3. Double-click any item on the list to open and edit it.
  4. Select Custom Fields. Then click Define Fields.
  5. Name your custom field in the Label column.
  6. In the Use column, select the checkbox to turn on the custom field.
  7. Click OK.

Once done, you can track custom fields to sales forms. Then, ensure to add them to reports. Although, not all reports will show custom fields. Here's an article for the detailed steps and visual guide: Create and Use Custom Fields in QuickBooks Desktop.
