Join nowIs anyone using numbers with their Chart of Accounts? I was testing the system before implementing in January with a 10 digit chart of accounts number (main number and sub account number). Sometime early January Intuit changed the number from 7-10 characters. Would like to know how other users use the number field. I am struggling with how to make my accounts and sub accounts fit into 7 characters. I am coming from Peachtree/Sage accounting system and they started with the standard 5 digit number.
Thank you
Welcome back to the Community, @CH55.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), the current maximum number of Account Numbers in the chart of accounts is 7 characters. The ability to add more is unavailable. I'll pass along your suggestion to our Product Developers. They're always looking for ideas to consider on how to improve QBO.
In the meantime, I recommend visiting our Blog site. This is where we share recent happenings and future developments, such as updates to newly added features.
Just in case, I'll add this article for future reference: Character limitations for fields in QuickBooks.

That you for your reply. I would like to mention that originally when I started setting up quickbooks in December 2019, the number of characters was 10. I input over 70 chart of accounts with 10 digit number codes. In January of 2020 the number of characters was 7. Might be a better question as to why they changed this field in the first place. Considering the help desk I spoke with said nobody uses that field anyway, why the need to change it.
Would love a reply as to why the change.
I appreciate you getting back to us, @CH55.
QuickBooks Online follows the standard account code in the Account Number field, which is a 5 to 7-digit code. That's the reason why they change it from 10 to 7-digit codes.
Since you were able to enter 10-digit codes for some of your accounts before, I suggest contacting our Technical Support Team. And provide a screenshot of the accounts with 10-digit codes. This way, they can review on this and consider it on the next update of QuickBooks.
