Disappeared Bank Account

Using Quickbooks Pro 2008 via Windows. Bank Account has disappeared. I might have improperly merged accpimts/ Not in Chart of Accounts (which won't accept selection of "Active"). Not in List of Bank Accounts. I have historical backups of all PC files (via Acronis True Image).

QUESTION: What files can I restore (as backed up prior to any improper merging of accounts) in order to recover the Bank Account?

Hi, pdco1. You can do the follow options I'll share to recover the bank account that suddenly disappeared.

 

Firstly, we can check if this account is still in your Chart of Accounts by ticking the Include inactive checkbox below. Doing this will show all the inactivated accounts in your QuickBooks Desktop and also check whether it's still part of this list. To do so, here's how:

 

  1. Go to the List menu.
  2. Select Chart of Accounts, then tick the Include inactive checkbox.
  3. Search for the bank account's name. 

 

If you find the account while doing this, let's reactivate it. You can click the X mark beside the inactivated account to restore it.

 

If you can't find it while following the steps above, we can restore your company file from a previous backup. It will help us undo the changes you've made with your company file. Let's locate the most recent backup of your QBDT company before the account disappearance. 

 

Since you're using a hosting service, you'll have to move it to your local hard drive before we can proceed to the next steps. You can follow the steps I'll share below. 

 

  1. Transfer your company file to another computer.
  2. Move the company file to another location on the same computer you're using.
  3. Relocate your entire QB data folder.
  4. Download it with Intuit Data Protect

Once you've performed this, follow these steps to restore a backup company file.

 

  1. Open your QBDT program, then go to the File menu and choose Open or Restore Company.
  2. Select Restore a backup copy and click Next.
  3. Toggle to Local Backup and hit Next.
  4. Browse your computer for the backup file. This a sample format [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Select a folder to choose where to save your restored company file, then click Open.
  6. When you're finished, select Save. If you receive any messages regarding possible data overwriting, choose the option that suits your needs. Do not overwrite anything unless you are sure.

Chart of Accounts will not permit ticking the "Show-Inactive-Accounts" box.

"File > Open or Restore Company > Restore Backup  Copy  > Local Backup" displays 3 items, all of which are dated AFTER point I desire to return to:

On my PC, in c:\p\p2\qkbks\CDP directory (screen capture attached), my DOS window (via Command Prompt) displays 6 files, all beginning with: "10146CDPorter" and having the following 6 extensions:
.ND
.QBW

.QBW.nd
QBW.TLG
.QBW.TLG.IR9MDGP6
.QBW~NF8JE8UL

As I have already written, I have a long string of historical backups of my PC (via Acronis True Image).
QUESTIONS:

1) Using my True Image backups, can I restore one, or more, of the the above 6 files (backed up PRIOR to point I want to recover) and restore the now-disappeared bank account?

In QuickBooks Desktop, there is no limit to the number of files that you can restore. When you restore a backup company file (.qbb), it will create a new company file (.qbw) that contains your data from that backup file.

 

Let me show you how to restore your backup company file using the .qbb file extension. 

 

Here are the steps:

 

1. Go to the File menu in QuickBooks and select Open or Restore Company.

 

2. Click on Restore a backup copy and then Next

 

3. Choose Local Backup and then Next

 

4. In the Open Backup Copy window, select the backup company file that you want to restore. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb. Then click on Open

 

5. Once the "Save Company File as" window appears, select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Make sure to name the restored new company file (.qbw) accordingly to avoid confusion. Then click on Save.

  1. Restoring Company (File > Restore Company or Files)
  1. I rephrase my question.
  2. Since the erroneous merging of the bank account (which I want to recover) occurred on April 6, 2024, I would like to recover its backup as it existed on April 5, 2024 (i.e., a day before the erroneous merging).
  3. I went to the List menu; then selected Chart of Accounts; and, then, upon seeking to tick the Include inactive checkbox, found that the QB app would not permit me to do this. Also, the Chart of Accounts did not list the Bank account I wanted to restore.
  4. On the Menu  for my CDP QB files, I then selected: File > Open or Restore Company > Restore Backup Copy  >   Local Backup
  5. The display listed one backed-up file, dated:

4/18/24       11:11 PM

  1. Thus, it occurred after the erroneous merging.
  2. On my PC, using a DOS window (obtained by using Command Prompt), I moved to the c:\p\p2\qkbks\CDP directory, It listed 6 files, all beginning with: "10146CDPorter" and having the following 6 extensions:
  1. .ND
  2. .QBW
  3. .QBW.nd
  4. QBW.TLG
  5. .QBW.TLG.IR9MDGP6
  6. .QBW~NF8JE8UL
  7. I don’t know how these six files came to be located in this directory. I can only think this results from my saving files via using (for my personal cdp QB files) QB’s Menu, and then selecting: File > Open or Restore Company > Open a Company Copy  >  Local Backup
  8. I have a long string of historical backups of my PC (using Acronis True Image).

QUESTION: Using my True Image backup for April 5, 2024, can I restore the necessary file, or files, to recover the “now-disappeared” bank account?

If you find that the option to Include Inactive is grayed out, it means that you don't have any inactive accounts. In such a scenario, you can search for the name of the bank account in the Look for account name or number box and then click on the Search button.

 

 

If you don't find any results, the best way to proceed is to restore your recent backup copy to retrieve your data. Yes, you can restore your backup from April 5, 2024, using your True Image backup and follow the same steps that I provided on how to restore a backup copy.

 

When you reach step 2, this will open the "Open or Restore Company" window. From this window, make sure to select the appropriate file type that you want to restore based on the file extension. For instance, if the file extension is ".qbw", then you should choose "Open a company file" to restore it. You can refer to the screenshot below for guidance.

Copy *.qbw file from the backup folder to a new folder. Then try opening the file on your QB Desktop program.

I found a QB Backup dated March 3, 2024, and have run it.
It successfully restored QB to that date (including the "disappeared" bank account).
I appreciate all your help and that of the others who have replied to my inquiries.
