How to reconcile a credit card statement starting January 1, 2024 without downloading all of the 2023 transactions; and how to enter the starting balance manually?

I opened a credit card account last year, and entered all of its expenses manually as journal entries and have completed that year's books. Now I have linked this account to Quickbooks and input these 2024 expenses to QB in the normal way. How to reconcile? I want to start reconciliations as of 1/1/24 and not reconcile 2023. I think I need to be able to manually create a starting balance as of 1/1/2024 and move forward from that point.

I appreciate you for sharing a detailed information here in the Community, Pilgrimbrent.

You can create a lumpsum reconciliation for 2023. Then, enter the beginning balance for 2024 in the Ending Balance field. This way, it will show as a starting balance when you start the reconciliation for this year.

Here's how:

1. Go to the Reconcile window.
2. Enter this year's beginning balance for this year in the Ending Balance field.
3. Type in the last day of 2023 in the Ending date field.
4. Click Start reconciling.
5. Select all transactions for 2023.
6. Click Finish Now.

You may also receive a prompt that the balance is not zero, depending on how the transactions are recorded. Just click Add adjustment and finish to proceed. The system will create an adjusting entry to zero out the balance.

After that, proceed to start reconciling the transactions for 2024.

Lastly, here's an article that you can browse through for you to be able to know when your bank statement doesn't match at the end of a reconciliation: Fix issue at the end of a reconciliation in QuickBooks Online.
