I disconnected my credit card from an account in Quickbooks and now I cannot re-connect it. When I try to do so I only have the option to bring in a new account.

In the LINK ACCOUNT setup for connecting my credit card again, usually there are options to link it to a specific account in my chart of accounts.  But it only gives me general options for Credit Card, Checking Account, Savings Account, etc.  Then when I select Credit Card it just starts a brand new account instead of linking the existing one.

Thanks for sharing details of your experience with having difficulties reconnecting your credit card to your QuickBooks account, @jdmarlow2. I'm here to help ensure we can find a solution that meets your needs.

I've replicated the situation here on my end and I was able to disconnect and reconnect a credit card account in QuickBooks Online (QBO). Also, I had the option to choose a specific account type. In your case,  we can perform some basic troubleshooting steps to get through this.

I recommend accessing your QBO account in a private or incognito window to determine if this is some kind of a browser-related issue. These keyboard shortcuts can start a session depending on the browser that you're using:

  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: CTRL + Shift + P
  • Google Chrome: CTRL + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: CTRL + Shift + N

Once signed in, reconnect your credit card once again. If it works, then that's great news. Otherwise, I suggest signing into your financial institution's website. You'll then check the following:

  1. Check your account for messages, notifications, or alerts.
  2. Look for any display issues as you navigate the website. These can block QuickBooks from downloading new transactions.
  3. Check your bank’s website for any announcements about new security requirements.

If everything looks good, go back to QuickBooks and then update your banking by going to the Bank Transactions page and selecting Update.

Thank you for your quick and thoughtful response.  I was able to get this working on a desktop browser.  However reconnecting my bank/credit card on the QBO iOS App also worked perfectly.  I have no idea why the desktop browser version did not behave as it should have.  Something to note for other users perhaps.
