In Self-employed gear menu

why can't I access my gear menu? I click on it and it's basically unclickable and not responsive. My bank connection is down again and there is nothing I can do to work on it if I can't access the menu!

Hello there, @cdelphy. I'll be sharing some troubleshooting steps to help you fix the issue with accessing the gear icon in QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE).

I've checked the QuickBooks status page to verify if there's an ongoing investigation, but I haven't come across anything with system issues.

To get rid of this problem, let's perform a few browser troubleshooting solutions to solve this unresponsive gear menu button in QBSE.

I suggest logging into your account through a private/incognito window. Private browsing prevents cookies from being stored on your computer, making it a great place to identify browser issues. To start incognito mode, use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl Shift N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl Shift P
  • Safari: press Command Shift N

Once signed in, click the Gear icon from there. If you're able to access it using a private browser, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache. Clearing the cache or cookies is the best way to get a clean slate for your browser. Otherwise, using other supported browsers can be a good alternative too.

If everything's good, you can proceed to reconnect your bank account again. On the other hand, you'll also want to visit this article to learn more about manually adding bank transactions: Manually add transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Additionally, each time you enter a transaction, it needs to be categorized. By doing so, the system will be able to place them on the appropriate line of your Schedule C form. See this article for your reference: Categorize transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

Let me know how this goes. I'd love to know any updates on this. Just add a reply below if you have additional questions about managing your QBSE account.

thank you so much Kevin! I was using Safari browser do I switched to Chrome and was able to successfully access that gear menu. At this point I'm still having issues because Quickbooks is not recognizing my bank account login. I understand there is a specific connectivity issue with Firstbank of Colorado. I worked for over a half hour today with a bank representative with no success. If there is anything you can suggest your end I'd be so grateful. I have several paid invoices in limbo since 9/17/22 due to this issue so I'm not currently receiving any deposits to my bank account. This is getting to be a dire problem. Thank you in advance!

Hi there, cdelphy.

I'm here to ensure you're able to connect to your bank account in QuickBooks Self Employed (QBSE). This way, you can monitor your transactions and keep your account updated.

Before we start, I appreciate you for sharing details while connecting to your bank account. This way, I can provide the exact resolution about it.

Here are some of the possible reasons you're having trouble connecting your bank account to QBSE:

  • The bank is performing system maintenance.
  • There are notifications from their website that need your attention.

To start, I'd first suggest logging into your bank's website to review if there are alerts that need your attention. Once signed in, perform the following steps:

  1. Review your account page for messages, notifications, or alerts.
  2. Check your bank’s website for any announcements.
  3. Once done, go back to your QBO account to perform a manual update.

Manually updating your account helps refresh the connection between your bank and QBO. Here's how:

  1. Click the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Connect Bank.
  3. Hit Refresh all.

Additionally, review how to add bank and credit accounts to automatically download transactions to QBSE.

I've also added this article to provide you tips on how to manage multiple accounts in QuickBooks Online as well as a link to reconcile your account: Find your bank or credit card account when you connect to online banking.

If there's anything else that I can help you with connecting First Bank to QBSE, leave a comment below. I'd be happy to assist you further. Wishing you the best.
