It appears you're experiencing difficulty with reconciliation in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, @CarriesMac. Knowing how important the reconciliation feature is to have accurate books, I'd feel the same as it disrupts my workflow. Yet, I'm here to offer you a range of troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue, ensuring you can proceed with your reconciliation smoothly.

I recommend performing the Verify and Rebuild process on your company data. These steps can resolve underlying data integrity issues that may be causing the problem and help fix them.

To begin with, here's how to verify your company file data:

  1. Go to the File menu, then select Utilities.
  2. Select Verify Data, then click OK to close all windows.
  3. If you see a message indicating “Your data has failed the integrity check” let's continue rebuilding your company file. Otherwise, you're all good.

To rebuild your company file data, kindly follow these steps:

  1. Go to the File, then select Utilities.
  2. Select Rebuild Data, then click OK to close all windows.
  3. QuickBooks will ask you to make a backup copy of your company file before rebuilding your data, then select OK.
    • If you haven’t set up any backup preferences, QuickBooks will ask you to update them. Select Backup Preferences and edit as needed, then select OK.
    • When the backup's finished, select Show in Finder to locate the backup or select OK if you’re done.
  4. If everything is finished, select OK.

After the rebuilding process, you can return to the reconciliation page and resume reconciling.

However, if the Reconcile button remains greyed out, I recommend performing a clean install of QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. This process will remove QuickBooks along with any residual installation files, allowing you to reinstall the program in a clean state.

I'll attach this future reference you may use concerning issues on the previous reconciliation report. This resource will help you resolve common issues while running previous reconciliation reports: Fix common problems on the Previous Reconciliation report.

The steps provided should help diagnose and resolve the problem you’re facing with reconciliation in QuickBooks. If there's anything we can assist you with, the Community is always open to everyone. We're here to help you to the best of our abilities.

@CarriesMac

Most likely your file is corrupted. Use the QB Desktop 2020 trial version to open your company file and run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility to make sure.

If you still encounter unresolved error messages after running the Verify/Rebuild Data utility more than once, you should focus on fixing it first.

Thank you, CarriesMac, for revisiting this thread and taking the steps suggested by my colleague. I understand you have encountered significant hurdles while preparing your bank reconciliations, and I admire your persistence in seeking a resolution. I am here to assist you further.

The issue with the greyed-out Reconcile screen may be due to a temporary software glitch that can occur after prolonged use of QuickBooks or following system updates.

Here’s what we can do:

  1. Force Quit QuickBooks: Since the standard procedures have not resolved the issue, please force quit the application by pressing Cmd + Opt + Esc, selecting QuickBooks, and then clicking Force Quit.
  2. Restart Your Computer: Once QuickBooks has been closed, kindly restart your computer. It can help resolve any minor glitches causing the application to freeze.
  3. Reinstall QuickBooks: After restarting, please uninstall and then reinstall QuickBooks. If dragging the app to the Trash has been unsuccessful, you might want to use a dedicated app uninstaller to ensure all associated files are removed. Reinstalling from a fresh download from the Intuit website ensures there are no corrupted files in your installation.

For more detailed guidance on uninstallation and reinstallation, refer to this article: Reinstall QuickBooks for Mac using ca lean install.

Hi @CarriesMac , this sounds like there is a window possibly off-screen that's blocking you.  When you're stuck like this, if you click any of the menu items at the top of the screen are they all greyed out as well?  If they are try this to close any stuck open windows:

1.  if QuickBooks is already open and stuck, hold the CTRL key and click on QuickBooks in the Dock

2.  in the menu that opens up, now hold the Option key and chose to Force Quit, this will close QuickBooks

3.  once it's closed, now hold the Command key and double click to open up QuickBooks (keep the key held down until you are back in your company file), this will open up your company file with all open windows closed

4.  now, go back to Banking and select Reconcile, hopefully this will open up like it used to for you to the Account selection window
