Is there a list that shows what banks provide the best data to when connected to Quickbooks? I've had 4 different banks, and they all provide different information and character length in the BANK DETAIL field. I use this field to automate transactions through rules, but most banks don't provide enough info to identify the correct location. For example, this is the exact same monthly utility ACH expense transaction as seen in the bank detail field from 4 different QB connected banks (modified numbers for security):
Grasshopper Bank: "CenterPoint Energy"
AMEX Checking: "Online Transfer / Payment: Debit"
Key Community Bank: "MGC ACH DR CPENERGY MNGCO 176333340S DIRECT DEBITING"
Wells Fargo: "CPENERGY MNGCO MGC ACH DR 006401133337 CNP [removed]"
Only Wells Fargo provides all the detail needed to determine that it's a utility expense and which location it belongs due to account number. AMEX checking doesn't show any relevant information even though it exists when viewing the transaction through their website portal. I have the same problem with deposit transactions, only Wells provides enough data. We now have 6 locations are still growing, I really need to automate these without going to the bank website to find the detail that I need. I don't like Wells Fargo and would like to find an alternative that provides similar data. Thanks.
Let me share some details about importing bank transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Bondo707.
QuickBooks Online (QBO) is designed to connect with a wide range of banks and financial institutions to import and categorize transactions. However, the quality of data can vary between different banks and financial institutions. To determine which banks provide the best data when connected to QuickBooks, I recommend reaching out to the respective banks for the most up-to-date information.
Since you mentioned the complete details will show in the portal and not in the program, I'd suggest excluding the bank transactions with the incomplete ones. Here's how:
Then, the transaction moves to the Excluded tab of the Banking page. To learn more about this one, check out this article: Exclude a bank transaction you downloaded into QuickBooks Online. Once done, manually import the transactions with complete details. Just follow the steps and details in this article: Manually upload transactions into QuickBooks Online.
If you're good with your transactions, you can now proceed to reconcile an account in QBO. If everything matches, you know your accounts are balanced and accurate. We recommend reconciling your checking, savings, and credit card accounts every month.

Hi, thanks for the attempt, but this is not what I asked. I'm very familiar with how to connect banks and how to set up rules, but my rules often depend on the amount and quality of data send by the bank.
As you stated, "the quality of data can vary between different banks and financial institutions". My initial example illustrates that by showing the data provided by four different financial institutions when paying the same utility bill. The data varies greatly, and only one of them provides me with enough data to create a location based rule. My original question was, is there a list that shows which financial institutions provide the best quality of data in the bank text? Thanks.
Hello there, @Bondo707.
We collaborate closely with all banks that QuickBooks supports. There's no specific financial institution that we provide special attention to in sharing data.
The banking data that gets imported into our system relies on your bank's website. Any maintenance, third-party app permissions, or issues on your bank's website will impact the connection with QuickBooks.
Since we can't suggest which one is best to use, you can research banks that support third-party apps like QuickBooks. Then, review the data-sharing capabilities and stability of their websites to ensure a steady connection.
When you've found the supported banks or financial institutions that work best for you, you can refer to this article to connect it to QuickBooks: Connect bank and credit card accounts to QuickBooks Online.
For future use, here's how to review downloaded bank transactions to ensure they're under the right categories: Categorize online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.
