Bank Reconcilation

I downloaded QB online to QB Desktop. I lost all my reconciliation from 2017 until the last confirmed reconciliation of December 31, 2020. I tried entering ending balance of Dec 31-2019 to see and it showing beginning balance as zero with a large difference.

Bank Reconcilation

Hi, sffdib.

The beginning balance is incorrect or zeroes due to converting files from QuickBooks Online to Desktop. However, all reconciled transactions from your register will be marked as reconciled on your QuickBooks Desktop. I'll help you get this fix.

Here's how:

Before doing the reconciliation, please create a back up copy of company file.

To correct a zero balance you need to create the opening balance by following the steps below:

First, create a journal entry using the correct date and amount.

  1. Go to the Company menu, then click Make General Journal Entries.
  2. Change the date to the correct statement date of your beginning balance.
  3. On the first line, select the correct account from the Account drop-down.
  4. Enter the correct opening balance in the Debit column.
  5. On the second line, select Opening Balance Equity.
  6. Select Save.

Second, do a mini-reconciliation to correct the Beginning Balance in the Begin Reconciliation window.

  1. Go to the Banking menu, then click Reconcile.
  2. Choose the appropriate account from the Account drop-down.
  3. Enter the statement date and ending balance that match your Journal Entry.
  4. Hit Continue.
  5. In the Deposits and Other Credits section, select the corresponding Journal Entry.
Note: The amount shown for the Difference should now be zero.
  6. Click Reconcile Now.

Bank Reconcilation

All reconciled transactions from the register are not marked as reconciled on your QuickBooks Desktop but they were on QB online.

The beginning balance is zero and it would be wrong to enter a new opening balance as we know for sure that the balances were correct when the company was on QB online.

Thanks for coming back to the Community, sffdib.

I appreciate for adding more details about your reconciliation. This will guide us on the steps we have to perform to keep your books in order.

When the beginning balance in QuickBooks Desktop and Online doesn't match, you’ll have to reconcile the account. If the unreconciled transactions and statements span multiple fiscal years, it’s recommended to reconcile them one year at a time. For detailed instructions, I still suggest following the solution shared by @DebSheenD.

I’m adding some links to help you in the future. These resources outline the complete steps on how to recreate the opening balance for an account and fix ending balance issues.

Stay in touch if you still need help with the reconciliation process. I’m more than happy to assist further. Have a good one.
