How do I mark personal credit card charges? (I have been paying from my personal bank and excluding the charge on QuickBooks so balances are negative)

I have a few personal credit cards and a few business credit cards. I know I shouldn't be mixing business with personal, but I like to take advantage of bonus points and offers so I got myself into this mess. I do not have a great understanding of QuickBooks, but if I have any personal charge, I'll just exclude it and pay the personal charge amount from my personal bank account. I understand this is probably not correct because my credit card balances in QuickBooks are all showing negative by excluding these charges. How can I fix this so it shows as balanced when I try to reconcile?

Hi, I've been doing bookkeeping for over 30 years. What I tell my clients is to make a category in the Chart of Accounts. Have it be an "equity" type and name it "personal expenses" or "owner draw". If you don't want to enter every personal charge you can enter a total of your personal charges for the month and give it the category of personal expense or owner draw. That way you'll balance to your statement each month. Hope that helps.

Hi Gail,

Thank you for your reply! It was very helpful. I added an "owner's draw" bucket, took the transactions out of excluded, and put them into the owner's draw and that seems to have helped. But I have run into another problem:

I have transactions in the "excluded" bucket that are from 2018/2019, so I cannot change them without my accounting being changed for 2018/2019. I need to enter my password to make any of these changes. Do you have any recommendations on what to do here?

Thanks again!
