You can add a new account and and copy the bank's URL, johndunnshops.

The first time you connect your bank, you can either search the bank's name or enter the URL. For you to connect the correct bank account, log in to your bank's website to copy and then paste the URL in the Connect and account page. Once done, follow the on-screen instructions until you'll successfully connect your bank account to QuickBooks.

You can read through this article for more details on how to add and connect bank and credit card accounts.

How do you change the online bank account link to your quickbooks bank account? I uploaded our quickbooks desktop file. We have 2 accounts and the link is wrong.

Hi Catherine,

I have a similar problem. My bank recently merged and changed its name. Now, when I download a .qbo file from their site and try to open it with QuickBooks, I see the "Select Bank Account" dialog box.

But the option to "Use an existing QB account" has an empty dropdown.  So I can't seem to force QB to equate the bank's new name with my existing account inside QB.  How can I get QB to make the connection and update my existing QB bank account to recognize the new .qbo file?

Thank you!

Mike

Thanks for joining this thread, @mbleyle.

I appreciate you downloading your transactions from your bank and trying to upload them to QuickBooks.

I suggest contacting your financial institution and check to see if they will allow QuickBooks to connect with them. This way, we'll be able to determine the cause why you're unable to select an existing QB account.

In the meantime, you can import you bank transactions using an Excel CSV file to manually bring them in to QBO.

Before proceeding, you also need to rename your bank account in QuickBooks Online as well. This will reflect the changes made on your financial institution.

Let me show you how:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Click the Gear icon at the top right.
  3. Under Your Company, select Chart of Accounts.
  4. Locate your bank you'd like to change the name on, then click the drop-down and select Edit.
  5. Enter the new name under Name.
  6. Click Save and close.

I've added this article for additional guidance with the information above: How to upload more than 90 days of bank transactions.

Should you need anything else, please let me know. I'd be glad to help.

Thanks for the response.  I should have been more clear. I'm not using QBO.  I'm using QB 2016 (upgrading soon to 2019). It seems like I will need to create a new Bank Account and import the transactions in the .qbo file into the new account.  I don't see a way to force QB to link an existing Bank Account with a .qbo whose name doesn't match exactly.

Thank you for your reply. It was a bank issue from a previous acquisition and the profile was setup incorrectly.  I really appreciate your time.

Thank you for clarifying this for me, @mbleyle.

You have the option to link your bank account through Direct Connect or import transactions manually to QuickBooks. Let me guide you through the steps.

The Direct Connect option automatically downloads your bank transactions to QuickBooks. To connect your bank account, you'll need first to contact your Financial Institution if they support Direct Connect.

Once they confirm, you will be redirected to a window providing you the option to enroll in the service.

But if you prefer to manually import your transactions, you may follow these steps below:

  1. Click on File from the menu bar.
  2. Choose Utilities, then select Import.
  3. Click on Web Connect Files.
  4. Select the QBO file you saved, then select Open.
  5. Choose whether to Use an existing QuickBooks account or Create a new QuickBooks account.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. Select OK.
  8. Go to the Bank Feeds Center to review your transactions.

I have a similar problem.  Bank was bought out but all of the accounts stayed the same.  The website you log in on changed and I see no where to update that.  The account is still the account and the login info is still valid.  I just need to change bank1.com to bank1newsite.com.

Hello, @PBJ Tshirt.

You can disconnect and reconnect the bank using the new website. I can guide you how to do it.

Just to clarify, what version of QuickBooks are you using?

If you're using QuickBooks Online, here's how you can disconnect and reconnect your bank using the new website:

To disconnect:

  1. Go to Banking in the left navigation panel, then Banking.
  2. Choose the Edit (pencil icon) on the account you want to change.
  3. In the Account window, check the Disconnect this account on save box.
  4. Click Save and Close.

To reconnect:

  1. From the left menu, select Banking.
  2. On the Banking page, select Add Account.
  3. In the Search field, enter the bank's URL (example: http://www.chase.com).
  4. Select your bank. If you see multiple options, you may have to repeat these steps to find the correct one.
  5. Enter your User or Login ID and password for the financial institution's website and select Continue.
  6. If you receive Error 103 again, select Go back, and repeat these steps, selecting a different bank name from the list.

Also, here's a good reference that you can check out about fixing banking errors in QuickBooks Online: What to do if bank transactions won’t download.
