Hello there, @debbie131.
I appreciate you for following the steps to edit the opening balance in our published article.
The opening balance will be your starting point when you initially create an account in QuickBooks. Hence, you'll also need to ensure the start date is correct by matching it with the beginning of your bank statement.
Let's check and review it so you can start your reconciliation. Here's how:
Next, compare the opening balance with your real-life account. Here's how:
If the opening balance in QuickBooks doesn't match your bank records, change it. I'll show you how:
Otherwise, continue to Step 3: Review your account register outlined in this help article: Fix issues the first time you reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.
For future reference, read through this article should you need to fix issues for accounts you've reconciled in the past in QuickBooks Online.
Let me know if you need more guidance with reconciliation. I'll be there to lend a hand.
Hi @katherinejoyceO ,
I had reconciled each month July - September prior to importing older transactions (January - June). I have changed both the original 6/30/21 opening balance date and amount since I reconciled the bank account for 9/30. It is now matching the 12/31/2020 opening balance per the bank in both the date and amount. The current balance does match the actual account balance as of today with pending transactions.
The amount on the Reconcile page as in error is the difference between the prior 6/30/21 opening balance and the 12/31/20 opening balance. I've read all the information in https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/bank-deposits/fix-beginning-balance-issues-if-you-...
but do not see how I can fix this and reconcile the months January - June.
Can you provide specific instructions on what needs to be done to reconcile starting in January as the opening balance date and amount are correct for 12/31/2020, but the Reconcile page says there is a incorrect opening balance?
Thanks for following up with the Community, debbie131.
Since your Reconcile screen is saying the account's opening balance is incorrect, you'll need to follow our process for fixing it. Detailed steps for doing so can be found in katherinejoyceO's post and the article links included within it.
Once you've finished fixing issues with your reconciliation, I'd recommend working with an accounting professional if you continue noticing an invalid opening balance on the Reconcile page. In the event you're in need of one, there's an awesome tool on our website called Find an Accountant. All ProAdvisors listed there are QuickBooks-certified and able to provide helpful insights for driving your business's success.
Here's how it works:
Once you've found an accountant, they can be contacted through their Send a message form:
I've also included a detailed resource about reconciling which may come in handy moving forward: Reconcile an account
If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a fantastic day!
