Merging credit cards in QBO

Hi, I have linked my credit card account from Chase bank with QBO. Unfortunately I needed to import all transactions but I linked all 3 credit card holders transactions, so now when I reconcile all of the transactions are under 3 credits card accounts, but the Credit card statement is only under so I can’t reconcile. Can someone please explain how I can merge the three credit cards to the main credit card accoutn but still import the transactions. THanks, Wes

Merging credit cards in QBO

Hello there, Wes. I'm here to help you manage your credit card accounts in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

If the 3 credit card accounts are assigned as sub-accounts, you can either connect them (transactions download to the individual accounts) or the parent account (transactions are downloaded to one account). When you first connect your account, the same opening balance entries may download to all subaccounts. You should remove all but one of these balances when you reconcile.

If this is the case, all the transactions will be shown to the parent account. That said, you'll have to reconcile the main credit card account. For reference, read this article: About bank or credit card subaccount setup.

If you want to merge accounts in QBO, you can use this article as a guide: Merge duplicate accounts, customers, and vendors in QuickBooks Online.

Once everything is fine, you're next step is to ensure the balance of your accounts matches your real-life bank statement by performing a reconciliation.

If you have any other concerns about managing your credit card accounts in QuickBooks. Have a good one and stay safe.

Merging credit cards in QBO

Great thank you. So I tried to assign the three credit cards as sub-accounts but it wouldn’t let me as it said “

You can't change the parent of this account to Chase B. ISOM (3049) - 3 because it or its parent is already set up for Online Banking or Web Connect.

What do I need to do to do so I can make the other credit cards sub-accounts to the main credit card? I am currently importing transactions from all of the credit cards.

Thank you for following up, weslaughton.

Allow me to chime in and help manage your credit card accounts in QuickBooks Online.

Before changing the account type for your credit card subaccounts, you need to make sure the its parent or the sub-account aren't connected to online banking. If its connected, you can disconnect it temporarily to avoid any error message like the one you received.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Banking menu, then go to the Banking tab.
  2. Select the bank you want to disconnect.
  3. Click the pencil ✎ icon, then select Edit account info.
  4. Uncheck the Disconnect this account on save checkbox.
  5. Click Save and Close.

For more details, you can check out this link: Disconnect accounts connected to online banking in QuickBooks Online. Once done, you can start assigning the credit card subaccounts to the parent account you selected.

Furthermore, before reconnecting to online banking, you need to know how your bank sends the downloaded transactions. Connect only the parent account if the transactions download to a single account. If the transactions download to individual accounts, connect the subaccounts rather than the parent account.

I've also added this article for future use in resolving any banking issues.: What to do if you get a bank error or can't download transactions in QuickBooks Online.
