Turn Off Sales Tax

Hi.

I would like to turn off Sales Tax because it is causing conflict with Clover.app and Commerce Sync app.

The sales tax was unintentionally turned on since October 2021 and it is disrupting the adding/matching of

bank deposits/payments received/undeposited funds starting Oct 2021 to present.

Your assistance is much appreciated.

Turn Off Sales Tax

Turning off the automated sales in QuickBooks Online is unavailable, Estrellita Peren.

However, you can inactivate the tax agencies listed under the Taxes section instead. Doing this will help the system not calculate taxes for that specific states.

Here's how to accomplish it:

  1. Go to Taxes and select the Sales Tax tab.
  2. Click Sales tax settings.
  3. Search for the tax agency you want to disable.
  4. Click the drop-down arrow under the Action column.
  5. Click on Make inactive.

I've added these articles to learn more about sales tax in QBO:

Please reach back out to me with any additional information on the issue so I can get you taken care of. Thanks for coming to the Community.

@EPPeren

You may have 2 options:

1. Replace Commerce Sync with another connector

2. Open a new blank QBO account with the AST feature is disabled and migrate your data from the old account. Purchase a 3rd party migration service if required.

Just move the agency start date to 01/01/2100 (or later), change to yearly and than inactive the agency. That will do the trick

Is there a way to tell QBO that I don't charge sales tax EVER!  I have to uncheck every stupid line on my invoice for the tax.  We don't sell product.  We don't charge tax .  This is so annoying.  HELP!

Glad to see you again in the forum, @suzannek1. I'll share some information you could apply so you won't be taxed.

You'll want to change and exempt those items from tax. This way, you don't have to uncheck every line on your invoice for the tax. You can follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Sales menu and select Product and Services
  2. Double tap on the taxable items, then click on Edit sales tax.
  3. From there, click "Still don't see what you're looking for?" then scroll down a bit and choose Nontaxable.
  4. Then, click Done

I've also added a screenshot for visual reference.

Moreover, if you want to apply sales tax rates to transactions and sales forms in QuickBooks Online, refer to this article: Apply sales tax rates to transactions and sales forms in QuickBooks Online.

Is there a way to change the default to non-taxable when creating/updating products? Every time I update a product type or enter a new one, it defaults to checking Taxable even if the product was previously marked non-taxable. How do I update the default?

Thanks for joining the Community and getting involved with this thread, teakettlebooks.

I tested this myself in our test drive account and can confirm products/services are still being marked as taxable for me, even with my Mark all new products and services taxable option turned off and after manually setting new products/services to be nontaxable.

Since you're encountering the same situation, I'd recommend getting in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.

They can be reached while you're signed in.

Here's how:

  1. Use the Help (?) icon.

  2. Click Contact Us.

  3. Enter a description of your situation in the What can we help you with? field, then hit Let's talk.

  4. Select Start messaging or Get a call.

Be sure to review their support hours so you'll know when agents are available.

If there's any additional questions, I'm just a post away. Have a lovely day!

Turn Off Sales Tax

QuickBooks should have a way to turn of Sales Tax period.  My client also turned it by mistake and don't use or will ever need it.  His invoices show the tab on the bottom and that is unnecessary.

Can't QuickBooks just improve this feature?
