Wondering what user ranks are and what they have to do with you?
User ranks are a fun community element that encourage participation while rewarding quality and establishing reputation in our community. Every member in the community is assigned a rank based on a multitude of factors (more about those below.)
You can see a person's rank in their profile or in any thread they have posted it, it appears just below their user name. Here is an example from my profile, and from a recent thread here in the community.
How is my rank determined?
Your rank is based on your engagement in the community - but it's not just how often you post, helpfulness and the value of your contributions also affect your ranking.
How can I earn a higher rank?
As we've mentioned, there are different actions that can help you gain higher ranks. The best thing to do is to visit our community often and talk to other members, but here are a few specific actions that will help you along your journey:
What are the Ranks available?
Our rank system is pretty straightforward - you start out as a New Member and as you progress, you gain levels. Right now we have Levels 1-15 (low to high) and we will periodically evaluate the rank system, so please feel free to leave any feedback on this post to let us know what you think!
Also, you may see some ranks not listed above - don't worry there are some ranks designed to help you identify employees and moderators in the Community. We are working on redesigning our internal ranks as well, so keep an eye out for a listing here of those ranks soon.
This new numeric ranking structure was a bad business decision as it seriously degrades the value that participants such as myself previously received when recognized "properly" for my many contributions to this community forum. Before this change, I was ranked as an "Established Community Backer". Having my "ranking" changed to a MEANINGLESS "level 9" was offensive and discouraging. I am now rethinking my continued participation as a result of this change.
Regina,
We have received quite a lot of feedback from members that the old rank names didn't make any sense to them, and it was confusing for them to try and understand what rank was "higher" than another. That was one of the primary factors in our moving to a number based system, since it's much easier for someone brand new to the community to understand that a rank of Level 3 has less engagement in the community than someone with a Level 9.
We absolutely value the time and effort you have invested to this point and hope that you will give the new system a chance and continue to contribute. But no matter your decision, please know that we appreciate all that you have shared to this point and thank you for being part of our community.
Thank you @LisaNullar for your response. Respectfully, I believe that a number does not hold the same meaning as a title. With that said, and more importantly, why are there level 2 and level 3 members being "featured" on the community home page that have contributed little or nothing in recent years to this community forum? I am a level 9, I have contributed a great deal to this forum. I deserve to be featured next to @Linda who is one of my most admired ProAdvisors in this forum. Why are these non-contributors still being featured in this forum? How can I earn this honor?
Regina
@Regina_Lend_A_Hand_Accounting we know that the featured members section hasn't been updated in awhile and we are looking into what criteria we want to use to choose which members to include on it.
Previously this was administered by a different group, so please bear with us while we draft new guidelines and identify the new members to feature. Once we do have our criteria in place then there will be a post explaining how featured members are chosen so that everyone has the opportunity to be featured.
@LisaNullar Thank you, Lisa. It would be nice to see "active" participants in the community forum highlighted. I believe that a few of the highlighted folks have not posted in over a year. I have personally contributed a great deal to this community forum this past year and have not received any recognition whatsoever. Also, I received NO leads from my public ProAdvisor profile, even though I am a 5-star rated "Advanced Certified ProAdvisor". I'm disappointed to say the least.
Warm Regards,
Regina
Hi @Regina_Lend_A_Hand_Accounting,
I hope you will not mind if I chime in here but as one of the OG's and @lynda's partner in crime in the Facebook Group QB Community Live I wanted to share my two cents.
New Beginnings Take Time & Energy:
Please understand that @LisaNullar is working hard behind the scenes to breathe new life into the community that brought Lynda and I together. For some time now, there have been actions happening by dedicated people such as Lisa to remind Intuit the corporation that we want and appreciate this community. With that in mind, I ask that you please bear with their team as they learn with us how to make this new community something even more amazing than it was before.
Featured Members:
I do think it is important to share with you that I too agree that it is time for the featured members to finally be changed. This topic is something I have discussed on many different occasions, especially while personally dedicating time to help promote the revitalization of this community. I remember when I first joined the QB Community and how excited I was to see my profile listed as featured, it is a feeling I hope many more rising stars have the opportunity to experience!
New Level System:
With respect, I noticed that you forgot to ask a very important question:
"What are the requirements to advance between the different levels?"
Without understanding the factors that advance a person from Level 1 to Level 2 or Level 8 to Level 9, it is impossible for us to place any value on the contributions anyone has provided to the community. If we were to only judge by the Posts, Solutions, Cheers Given, or Cheers Received, than you would have easily outperformed me.
I am certain that you will agree with the following:
I contribute to our community because I believe that Together We All Succeed. While I appreciate any promotion that Intuit may bestow upon me, I contribute because I want to help my community grow!
If there is one thing that I have learned about Intuit the corporation. It always sees the actions of those helping others. Stay true to your course of helping others and before you know it you just might find yourself featured here and possibly on the Firm of The Future Blog.
Thank you for being a vital part of this community and helping to motivate Intuit to breathe new life into our online home, the QB Community!

Matthew, I appreciate your good intentions with your responsive post and thank you for your contributions to this community. I trust that Lisa has good intentions for this community as well. I am not concerned with raising my current level within this community. I have reached level 9 for my contributions this past year and feel that I have made a meaningful positive impact within this community because of my contributions, which was a personal and professional goal. I've also joined your Facebook group, as well as other Facebook groups that support the QuickBooks ProAdvisor community. I am very proud to be a "current" QBO Advanced Certified ProAdvisor. My Nationwide cloud accounting firm was developed to support QBO users and seamlessly connects to QBO for accounting service delivery. I am a loyal and dedicated Intuit ProAdvisor. I am sad to hear the news that Intuit will not be hosting the "Firm of the Future" in 2020. As this initiative is what inspired me to build my Nationwide QuickBooks Online Firm of the Future. You have noted a South African leadership philosophy in your post that I firmly believe in, UBUNTU, which means that "I am who I am because of who we all are", "that TOGETHER we shine!" Lynda inspired me to become a ProAdvisor a few years ago, and Inuit and this community inspired me to work with my husband, a former System Development Engineer for Amazon to build an accounting service delivery platform that is "connected" to QuickBooks Online. Our first 4 months in business this year have far exceeded our expectations, we are grateful and thrilled!! One thing I learned from the great leaders that I have known is that real change cannot be achieved with the good intentions of others. We all have good intentions. We have to empower others to pull the cord and initiate real change.
Regina,
It makes me smile to know that the good intentions of Lynda, the leaders of Intuits QB Community, and myself have helped motivate your success in business! I feel comfortable in speaking for Lynda when I say we look forward to watching your business grow as a result of your willingness to help those around you!
Thank you for joining QB Community Live Facebook group, I hope that you find it beneficial along your journey and look forward to learning from you and your contributions.
Like you, I also missed the existence of the Firm of the Future competition at QuickBooks Connect but I trust Intuit will undoubtedly surprise us all with a new initiative designed to help small businesses grow!
Thank you for sharing your personal version of my mantra "Together We All Succeed". While they may differ slightly in perspective, they both illustrate our good intentions for this community!
If I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out!
Happy New Year!
Matthew Fulton
