Desktop to Laptop

Hi! I currently use desktop pro plus 2024 version. Is it possible to transfer this version to a laptop going forward?

@LisaB77  Desktop in this context basically just means 'Not QuickBooks Online'.

Although there's a general performance difference between laptops and desktops, there is nothing specifically stopping you from installing QuickBooks Desktop of any variant on a laptop.

Hello, @LisaB77. Moving QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) to another computer is totally doable. I'm glad to guide you through the process.

You can use the Migrator Tool to transfer or reinstall QBDT on another computer. However, you need to be the Company Admin to do this.

Before we dive into the steps, let me fill you in on how the tool works and what you'll need.

How the Migrator Tool works:

  • You'll create a unique password to access the files copied to your new computer. Make sure to jot it down so you remember it. You'll only need this once and only for the migrator tool.
  • The tool will copy up to the last three company files opened (along with all supporting files) to a USB flash drive.
  • You'll use the USB flash drive to move the files, and the Migrator Tool handles all the technical work.
  • The tool will download the correct version of QBDT to your new computer and set it up with your files.
  • The tool won't erase any other files or reformat your drive.

What you’ll need:

  • Ensure your new computer is connected to the internet.
  • A USB flash drive with sufficient free space to hold your QB files. The Migrator Tool will let you know how much free space you need. Most people require between 150 and 250 MB.

When you're set, follow these steps to set up and use the tool:

On the old computer:

  1. Open QBDT.
  2. Navigate to the File menu and choose Utilities.
  3. Select Move QuickBooks to another computer.
  4. Click I'm Ready, then generate a one-time password.
  5. Follow the instructions to pick the USB flash drive you'll be using, and then wait for the files to be copied.

On the new computer:

  1. Insert the USB flash drive. Due to Windows security restrictions, the tool won't open automatically.
  2. Open the flash drive to see its files and double-click Move_QuickBooks.bat to launch the migrator.
  3. Type the password you created, then select Let's go.
  4. Wait for the tool to finish.

Once completed, the migrator tool automatically removes your QB files from the USB flash drive. The data will still be on your old computer, but it's strongly recommended that you rename it to avoid using the wrong version.

For further guidance on your subsequent tasks, check out the What to do next section of this informative article: Move or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop to another computer.

Feel free to return to this thread if you need more help with the migration process, Lisa. I'm always available to offer support. Have a productive day ahead!
