How can I set up a sandbox version of one of my QBO companies for testing?

Is there a way to copy my existing QBO file to use as a sandbox for testing out use of different features (e.g. budgets for customers, locations)?

You are certainly allowed to open a second subscription (for a fee) or check out features instead using the Sample Company included. Gear Icon, Your Company, Sample Company

Hi - there is no sample company listed under the gear icon. Is there another way to access this in QBO? Thanks!

Good day, @VFAKathy.

I have just the resources you'll need to test these features in QuickBooks Online. The quickest way to access the QBO Test Drive company is by following this link and clicking the URL there. This sandbox company is pre-filled with generic data you can test with, any and all changes will be deleted as soon as you close the page.

Regarding the features you mentioned intent on testing, here are some additional resources that you may find helpful:

Lastly, if you have additional questions or concerns during your testing, please reach out to me here with anything you need. I'll be happy to assist in any way I can along your road to success. Thanks for reaching out, wishing you a wonderful rest of your day.

I don't think that you actually answered the OP question. He and I along with many other developers need to be able to test out applications on a copy of our customers system with there account numbers and customers. This will allow us to uncover conflicts with there existing system. We cannot trust that everything will work fine because it worked on some generic database that Quick Books provided.

Start a new subscription. If the testing will be <30 days, use the free trial.

Then use an app like Chronobooks to copy the existing file into the new one

Thank you for joining this thread, @ClintS.

Allow me to share additional information on how you can access a Sandbox company file.

Currently, the ability to copy your existing QuickBooks Online company file for testing purposes is not available. However, you can visit our Intuit Developer Forum and create a sandbox company file.

Here are the steps:

  1. Visit: https://help.developer.intuit.com/s/.
  2. On the Intuit Developer page, go to the right-hand side.
  3. Under Platform Status, look for QuickBooks Online Sandbox.
  4. Choose either View Sandboxes, or Create New Sandbox.
  5. Login using your QuickBooks Online login credentials.

Once you have a new sandbox company file, you can import the data you need and set it up just like your existing QuickBooks Online account.

Feel free to reach out to us here in the Community if you have other questions about creating and managing a sandbox QuickBooks Online company file. I'm always here to help.

There's problem numero uno right there. What @ClintS  wants to do, copy his existing QBO data file into another new QBO company file (a pretty simple task in Desktop) whether in a paid trial, or free sandbox is impossible with QBO alone. What is required to do is:

  1.  download free trial of QB Pro/Premier 2019 https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Help-Articles/QuickBooks-Desktop-trial-links/m-p/185974
  2.  export QBO company to desktop software https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Help-Articles/Export-data-file-from-QuickBooks-Online-to-Des...
  3.  import desktop company into new QBO or your sandbox option file https://quickbooks.intuit.com/community/Help-Articles/Convert-QuickBooks-Desktop-file-to-QuickBooks-...
  4.  now you can play with a copy that might not be 100% of your original data but pretty close.

Hello @ClintS ,

There is an option to use the QuickBooks trial (for 30 days for free), you can export the data entity by entity and import it to the trial with Business Importer app QuickBooks and then test the trial with all your actual data.

Hope that helps.

I created a sandbox account. As @juVielL mentioned:

Once you have a new sandbox company file, you can import the data you need and set it up just like your existing QuickBooks Online account.

How do I import the data I need. MY QBO data?

The sandbox account is used when you have a third-party application where you want to create an integration with QuickBooks Online. If you're referring to import your QBO data to the sandbox, this option isn't available.
