I agree. Online is WORTHLESS. It Duplicates downloaded entries and when you find it (if) you have to go all over the place to delete the duplicate and then your still not seeing the whole entry. Reporting sucks. And I work with IT to modify accounting software and this is one of the worst. I had a CPA keep telling me you need to go to online, and I told him to try it for 3 months and if he liked it, I would move over.. HAHA HE called me and told me he just informed his clients to find someone else or move to desktop. If you enter everything everyday and you only have 25 or entries it is ok. But you still can't look at anyone place to verify it all is in ok.
There was no reason, they didnt move the desktop platform to online.
Hang in there, we are working on another software since Quickbooks is trying to kickout the small/mid size businesses. You cant afford Enterprise and its overkill and now they are removing Assisted Payroll from the desktop unless you already have it. So instead of having a one stop shop you have to have all these downloads. Horrible.
You mentioned online may have issues because of Low internet. We live in a very rural area and some people still have dial up. And it will be another 4 years to fiber optics. Online doesn't have the same capacity or functionality as desktop. I know of approx. 90 desktop accounts locally in a 4 mile radius and between the push for Online and pricing, they are killing these small businesses. Now some are starting to add employees and cant even have a one stop shop. You have to use online for payroll and dowload the figures, but you loose the detail in your own system and still have to sign in to another account to answer questions. Stupid
I would love to work online and have loaded desktop on a VPN. I would use their online if it was workable and able to drill down to make corrections that your client makes a mess of or the bank download duplicated entries.
Not the same platform. They should have used Desktop as the platform for online.

How many employee do you have?
I REALLY WISH I HAD READ ALL OF THESE HORRIBLE COMMENTS. I WAS USING THEIR PAYROLL SERVICE AND IT WAS NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT USE THEM! SOMEONE COMMITED FRAUD ON MY ACCOUNT AND THEY WANT ME TO PAY FOR IT! THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS! DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THEIR PAYROLL SERVICE!
QuickBooks is worse than terrible. THEY ARE CRIMINAL with their abuse and negligence.
I agree...it's the worst piece of garbage I've ever used. Ridiculously slow and clunky. So difficult to see what you are looking at. As an independant bookkeeper I have several clients using it and are stuck paying exorbitant fees for nothing. Not to mention they have to pay me more because it takes FOREVER to do the simplest of tasks. They can no longer manage their inventories, they constantly inadvertently make changes to work I have done. Stop having IT people create software....have real bookkeepers and accountants build it. And stop ripping people off with your pricing.
oh and get used to the changes.....non stop changes. Every time I log in there something else changes that was working perfectly fine.
Why don't you switching to QB Desktop?
Complete garbage. I've used the desktop version since 1994. Went online three weeks ago and struugled to move my company. Three weeks later I'm still back peddling to enter data from the lost week. Thankfully I had a good backup file because the tech that "helped" me to migrate ( unsuccessfully) pretty much destroyed my data. I was relieved to finally accomplish the move, that is, until I started using the desktop version. I'll use this garbage until I find a more useful product.
Why didn't you stay with QB Desktop?
Sales pitch, and much lower cost. I was sold a product that was billed as the same as desktop, just a little different interface. I do take some responsibility for not checking reviews, and such. I may actually go back to desktop, but it's going to cost almost 4000.00 for all the users we have. (5)
My clients use it. I would never choose it.

Did you have QB Desktop Premier Plus for 5 users or QB QB Desktop Enterprise for 5 users?
Do you need any add-ons (e.g QB Payment, QB Payroll) ?
What do you recommend? I've read reviews online, and there will be articles for "The top 10 accounting software for 2024" and they all put quickbooks at the top which is crazy scary from my perspective. Makes me wonder if they've actually used it or if they're just comparing bullet points of what it's supposed to do and not how it actually functions. Not to mention the constant "improvements" that continue to degrade the functionality. Most of those articles tend to use the same keywords like they were paid by quickbooks to rank their review and almost just copy and paste a PR release straight from quickbooks.
Contact me in private and we can share 3 cloud based accounting apps to explore. Once you are ready to proceed, you can convert your data to QB Desktop file and use the trial version to access your historical data for good. Then you can start from scratch in the new app to lower your conversion costs.
Desktop Enterprise w/5 users.
I think most of the frustration comes from businesses previously using desktop, then moving online. If QB online is your first experience, it may be fine for you.
QB Desktop 2024 Enterprise Silver = < $3500
You should consider downgrade your data to QB Desktop 2024 Premier Plus for 5 users = < $2300
Dumping QBO today for one single reason…..the rep on the phone was so increasingly rude…I literally canceled. Had not even called about that….but she was sooooooo rude and unhelpful….I’ll take my company account to a competitor. Name was Dianne. Good riddance!
It never ceases to amaze me how this software keeps going backwards, especially for the person that is required to do any amount of data entry.
- You can no longer enter a quantity, then arrow down to just go to the quantity on the next lineitem. You have to tab through it, then reposition your cursor.
- Same comment on dates.
- You can no longer select specific text in a description and copy it anywhere else. Positioning your cursor and dragging to select the end of the text now attempts to move the entire lineitem. WTF?
- Line items that are not intended for billing, but rather notes, automatically get sorted to the beginning of the invoice because they have no date.
- Entering lineitem amounts in even dollars removes the ".00", in spite of other lineitems with cents retaining the precision portion of the amount... what an eyesore!
All of this makes data entry take 2 to 3x as long. Thanks for all the new features... I could care less. How about making using the software easier to use, not harder... Intuit is going to pay a BIG price on the day that a reasonably priced competitor enters the market. I have yet to meet or speak to a person that likes this POS.
It isn't good no matter when you started using it. My partner used desktop for years. He wasn't very good with computers but he managed with the desktop version. We decided we wanted 2 users and some sales rep convinced him online was best for us, around 2016. Once we switched to online he couldn't figure out how to use it. So I took over doing estimates, invoices. Come to find out we couldn't do progress invoicing and change orders, a crucial part of our operations. This left me using my own work around for progress invoicing and doing change orders outside of Quickbooks. I was spending more time trying to adapt to partial use of Quickbooks than not using it at all. After about 2 years they finally added progress invoicing but it has some issues. QBO still doesn't do change orders though. Eight years and still no change orders. After doing research into these items I found that desktop did/does the things I need and it does them better. QBO is a different animal than QBDT. I have almost no experience with QBDT and yet I know it is better. QBO is unacceptable in its current forum. I am now looking yo switch to another accounting software. What Intuit is doing is so blatant and obvious I find it offensive. People keep saying why didn't they make the desktop version just available online. It's because they needed to chop it up, in order to be able to charge you for certain specific features separately.
I had an issue recently where I needed to reach put to customer support. The CSR kept trying to upset me on a more expensive plan. I don't need a more expensive plan. I use Quickbooks in a very basic way. He even called me 3 times over a couple of days, trying to get ahold of me. This was really irritating considering I am at my wits end with QB. So, the shirt of it is it Stinks to put it politely. I'm tired of their work arounds to address their inefficiencies, their canned responses, aggressive sales tactics, the outright lying, the acknowledge and ignore sales techniques and on and on.
All that doesn't matter if you're new to QBO or not is still pretty bad. I won't sit and pretend that there aren't things that I like because there are. Those things aren't the reason I'm looking to leave QBO.
Offensive isn't a strong enough word to describe the late-stage capitalism, greed-driven, abusive business model Intuit has employed since the introduction of their garbage QBO software. QBO can never be a substitute for QBDT because it's a completely new and different program. It's poorly written and designed, fails the very basic ISO standards for online software, has never worked properly, and likely never will work properly, is overflowing with bloat, popups, and senseless tiers. And worst of all, it leaves the user with ZERO control over their data. One cannot easily make backups unless you pay for the highest tier they offer.
And Intuit does not care about negative feedback or complaints about awful customer support (which many of us here have provided, repeatedly). I doubt they even care if users abandon them for their competitors. For the sake of sanity, the only answer is to find an alternative. There are many and they too know how awful QBO is to use. Freshbooks and Sage are two and both take deserved potshots at Intuit.
RE: And Intuit does not care about negative feedback or complaints about awful customer support (which many of us here have provided, repeatedly).
Intuit is a big company. They used to have great support because that is what they wanted. Then they had sort of OK support because that is what they wanted. Then they had not so good support, because that is what they wanted. Now they have rather horrid support by untrained agents with a limited understanding of English - some reportedly don't even have access to QuickBooks on their locked down computers. Because that is what Intuit wants. If they wanted it to be different, it would be different.
Same with QuickBooks Online. They have had over 20 years to make QuickBooks online good. They have not done so because they don't want to. If they wanted to, they would have done it by now.
Intuit is a marketing company that happens to sell software. Their focus is "how much can we charge", not "how good can we make our products".
There's a little company named Boeing that has had a similar strategy for 15 years or so when "how good can we make our planes" started turning into "how cheaply can we make our planes". It's not going well for them. Maybe Intuit should take note.
I am now looking yo switch to another accounting software.
