You need to close your first company file and open the second one normally. You can only open 2 company files at the same time in QB Desktop Accountant and Enterprise. If you don't need to run any add-ons (e.g payroll), you can use the trial version of Enterprise as a workaround.

The option to manage multiple company files simultaneously is exclusive to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Accountant and Enterprise versions only, prkimmel. I'll relay more details about this and share the steps to open another company.

Chrea is correct. Since this option is unavailable on the QBDT Pro Plus subscription, you can only open and manage one company at a time. In the Accountant and Enterprise software, the limit to how many companies you can work on is two.

To learn more about the functionality, kindly review this link: Open and use a secondary company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

On the other hand, you can switch to another company file on your Pro Plus program by following these steps:

  1. Open QBDT.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Open Previous Company.
    Open Previous Company.png
  3. Choose the file you want to open.

Still, if you want to administer two companies at the same time, you can consider upgrading your QBDT plan.

Additionally, I've attached these resources you can use if you need to backup, update, or move your QBDT company file to another device:

This second answer is the best answer to my question, but the site won't let me mark it so.

I'm glad to hear that the solution provided by my colleague answers your question.

To mark the post as Accepted as Solution, I recommend signing in and out of your QuickBooks Community account. The Accept as Solution button is beside the Reply button. However, if the issue persists, we can troubleshoot it by logging in through incognito mode or a private window. This helps in identifying and resolving issues that can disrupt your workflow and overall user experience.

Here's how:

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome).
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + P (Firefox).
  • Press Control + Option + P (Safari).

Once logged in, check for the Accept as Solution button. If it works, go to your default browser and clear the cache.

Otherwise, switch to a different browser like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari. The one you are currently using may be experiencing a temporary issue with QuickBooks, and using a different browser temporarily will allow you to get back to work.
