Join nowON THE EMPLOYEE ENTRY WHEN USING THE NEW 2020 W-4 DO YOU ENTER THE AMOUNT OF TAX TO BE WITHHELD THAT WAS CALCULATED ON STEP 2(B) LINE #4 ON THE MULTIPLE JOBS WORKSHEET? WHICH CALCULATED TO BE $85.38 WHICH WAS LINE 1 $4400.00 DIVIDED BY LINE 3 52 WEEKS = $85.38 OR DO YOU ONLY ENTER THE AMOUNT THEY WANT WITHHELD IN ADDITION TO THE $85.38 CALCULATED ON THE WORKSHEET ON STEP 4 LINE C.
FROM WHAT I AM UNDERSTANDING IT IS $85.38 + $10.00 PER WEEK EXTRA THE EMPLOYEE WANTS WITHHELD FOR A TOTAL OF 95.38 ON STEP 4 LINE C AND IS ENTERED IN THE EXTRA WITHHOLDING FIELD IN THE QB SCREEN FEDERAL TAXES. I BELIEVE THIS IS WHAT SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO ASK ON THE COMMUNITY BUT WITH NO GOOD ANSWER.
It should not be that hard to google this https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/faqs-on-the-2020-form-w-4 and Q11 gives you 3 choices. To answer your specific question, you enter the extra amount to be withheld
I KNOW HOW TO COMPLETE THE FORM BUT I WAS ASKING ABOUT THE SET UP IN QUICKBOOKS ON THE FEDERAL TAB IN TAXES. GOOGLING WHAT THE IRS SAYS HAS NO BEARING ON HOW TO ENTER IT IN QUICKBOOKS. IF WE ONLY ENTER THE EXTRA $ AMOUNT OVER THE CALCULATED AMT FOR FEDERAL IT ONLY TAKES OUT THE EXTRA $. IF WE ENTER NOTHING IN THE EXTRA FIELD THEN NO TAXES ARE BEING WITHHELD. THIS IS THE SAME QUESTION I HAVE SEEN MANY PEOPLE TRYING TO ASK ON THE COMMUNITY. I KNOW THAT IT IS NOT THAT WE NEED TO UPDATE BECAUSE WE UPDATE EVERYTIME BEFORE WE DO PAYROLL TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE THE LATEST UPDATES.
IF THEY 2020 W-4 FORM SAYS 95.93 ON THE EXTRA WITHHOLDING LINE ON THE W-4 PAPER FORM WHICH IS THE TOTAL OF 85.93 THAT WAS CALCULATED ON THE WORKSHEET + $10.00 EXTRA THEY WANT WITHHELD EACH WEEK. IS $95.93 WHAT I ENTER IN QUICKBOOKS ON THE FEDERAL TAB IN THE EXTRA WITHHOLDING FIELD. OTHERWISE NOTHING BUT THE $10.00 IS WITHHELD IF I JUST ENTER THE EXTRA $10 THEY WANT WITHHLED.
Hello, @JCI0412.
As per the article provided above, allowances are no longer used for the redesigned Form W-4. Allowances that were tied to a personal exemption amount are no longer allowed by law. Thus, only the amount entered on the Extra Withholding section be calculated.
To learn more about the new changes to the Federal W-4, check out this article.
Post again if you have any other questions. I'll be happy to help. Have a good day!
NONE of you are understanding her question....is there a file somewhere that shows a filled out W-4 example and a QB 2020 W4 screen for HOW the information is to be entered into QB? Apparently EVERYONE is confused on this matter!
Hi there, JMCSMI.
Thanks for following up on this thread and providing those clarifying details about the updated W-4 form question.
I recommend checking out this article that covers what’s changing with the Federal W-4. Additionally, the IRS website has presented a very helpful list of FAQs for the 2020 W-4 form.
While there are many articles available to assist with the entry, there isn't an example file with details on how the form info should be entered within the system. I'll be sure to pass your feedback along to the Product Development Team to let them know you'd like to see this added to the Desktop Payroll program. You can keep an eye out for these types of updates by viewing the QuickBooks Blog.
In the meantime, I recommend reaching out to your accountant or ProAdvisor for advice on the best way to enter data into the form. If you don't have a ProAdvisor, you can search for one in your area by clicking here: Find an Accountant.
Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you have any other questions.
